Preparing for the Inevitable
March 26 – 28 2133
The bustling of the colony woke me up on the sofa. I could hear people moving things outside. I got up quickly and went into the corridor. I had no shoes on and my hair wasn’t in a ponytail or anything. I saw a few marines mounting a rail gun near a window. They had cut a hole threw it to make a good opening for the gun. I went back inside to grab my gear; I was in my underwear essentially. I got my armour back on and went out to help.
I walked past the marines in the hallway; they nodded as I went past. They were nearly done but I saw others doing the same as I called for the elevator. It seemed we were preparing for full-scale war. I got in and went down to the lobby; I was hoping the others were helping out. I came out into the lobby with large boxes of ammo moving past me. They loaded them into the elevator; I walked towards the front entrance. It opened with bright sunlight hitting my face. It blinded me temporarily, when my vision cleared I saw everything.
The marines from our battle group were fortifying every building they saw. There were sandbags at every entrance to the buildings. They had the same deal with the towers entrances. They were placing two heavy machine guns when I walked out. It looked like the entire battle group had come down. The techs were working on the power grid sections across the colony.
I saw our fighters and choppers going through the sky. I continued forward with Harris in my view. He would know what needed doing around here. Knowing my luck, I’d get stuck with that jackass Lawrence. I hated that guy but he was a member of the colony. He saw me coming through the huge crowd with some people were buying things. It was as if they wanted to carry on with their normal lives. I found that strange given what occurred last night.
I stopped as Harris was signing off something for a marine. He seemed to have a decent plan for defending the colony. He turned to me taking a deep breath from everything we were doing. It was the first time I had seen him stressed about his work.
“It’s good to see you up and around Danielle. We need help clearing up some things around here. Jason asked for your help in the communication tower there were some systems going wacky. Given your experience in a communication squad I thought you be of help.”
“I’ll do what I can to help him. If I can find the way there, that is. I remember it being on the other side so I’ll catch a tram.”
“I’m sure you’ll find your way sergeant. Now get to it, we need t be ready for these bastards when they get here.”
I started to walk away and look for the tram. There were three leading over the river but I had no idea which one I needed. I went to the waterfront; I tried to see the closest one to me. I saw a set of large metal stairs curling around one of the supports holding up the station. There was a path leading along the waterfront. I started to walk watching everyone go about their business.
There was no one who wasn’t busy in this mess. I saw plenty of rail guns being placed in towers and on rooftops. The tram was still in place with people not even boarding yet. I did a quick jog through the street leading there along the water. I saw a bunch of people heading up the stairs and I followed them up. They seemed pleased to see me when I got up there with everyone else. I walked past a few going down and they gave me a smile. It was weird with all the rumours I had heard about their hate for us.
I saw down waiting for the tram to get moving. There was a woman next to me; she was one of the stockbrokers. She looked like it anyway; she turned and smiled at me. I was watching the water; it gave me a sense of peace. She shuffled over looking straight at me. I stared at her but she was shy, I think she wanted to ask me something. I moved in my chair and decided to help her out a little.
“If there’s something you want to ask then it’s ok. I never mind questions from anyone.”
“Ok then…well I just wanted to say that I like the fact women are in the military. I’m proud that you’re doing what other are afraid to do. My names Amelia by the way, I ended up a stockbroker.”
“There’s nothing wrong with being a stockbroker. It’s an important and difficult job in these days. I joined through choice but I’m guessing you wanted to as well.”
“Yeah I did but I never got the chance, my family wouldn’t allow it. I’m glad of my job though, I still help in a lot of was. It all seems worth it.”
“It is worth it Amelia, never forget that. I appreciate the compliment; I’ll do my best to save this colony.”
She smiled and turned back to the tram. It was little conversations like that; it gave the colony some uniqueness. She didn’t say anything else so I moved back and watched the water again. I had been told so many wrong things in my life. The people of Dark Space weren’t evil or greedy but the Alliance who acted this way. It was a real eye opener for me, I suddenly felt that saving these people was everything.
Harris must’ve thought the same when he first came out here. He had never said a bad thing about people who lived in Dark Space. He was even friends with Jason and his family, which showed a lot. I think I knew what Jason really meant now; people who come here never feel the same. For me this place gives a sense of peace and reassurance. The alarm for the tram sounded with doors opening.
I got up along with Amelia, she turned to me but I raised my hand for her to go first. She took the hint and boarded the tram. I joined her with everyone looking at me; you would think they saw an Alliance soldier before. I sat down and the tram began moving. It was a fast transport; it would only take a matter of minutes to get across. I looked at the sun still rising. It seemed different here from Earth but the sun seemed brighter somehow.
I heard everyone talking about the attack. Some of them told their stories of survival. I never have to tell those stories, most missions I did were never public knowledge. The Outer Rim was dangerous but I liked the unknown. I saw the other half getting closer; the communication tower was in the distance. It was massive; it had a dish that could transmit into Alliance space.
That was light years away from here; it gave me an insight into the repairs. It would be hard to repair something that size and then test it. If the other ships were going to send back any useful intelligence, we needed it to be working. The tram started to pull into the station after crossing the immense bridge. I saw poles in the ground but they were actually lights, they were on the bridge as well.
It eventually came to a stop and we all got off with a fresh group ready to get on. I moving when I was off the tram, there were signs leading to places. I looked at them with communication tower being to the west. I saw the other living towers as well. They were exactly the same as the one I was in at the moment. I went down the stairs into a slightly rundown area. I think I was seeing the darker side of Vau, this wasn’t mentioned in any broacher.
It wasn’t terrible like Earth though, there didn’t seem to be any crime committed. People were still friendly to me; I even got a wave from Amelia. She was heading in the opposite direction towards the living towers. I waved back with others smiling at me. There were more stalls selling goods, they weren’t so high class but still nice. This place seemed to have a local graffiti group.
On one of the stalls, there was 21st century graffiti all over it. It was signed in memory of Luke West, the leader of the Vau merchant guild. I thought of it as a strange way to remember someone but it was good to look at. I moved on from the stall, it was nice to see some imagination. Luke must’ve been very important to this place for that sort of honour. The picture in the middle was a photograph of the man himself. He seemed nice enough to me, if he did some good then it’s worth it.
I saw the antenna come into view; I wasn’t far away now I think. Getting around this city wasn’t easy, it seemed bigger from a distance. It really wasn’t that hard with signs everywhere. It was about mid-day now with all the walking I’d done to get here. I saw the entrance to the tower finally, after I had negotiated a number of streets. I went quickly to the entrance with even more marines around.
The communication tower was an important part of the defence and colony. It needed to be protected against a pre-emptive strike. We couldn’t have them take out our link to the fleet otherwise we’d be screwed. I jogged through the entrance to see the lobby full of equipment. The room itself was a box with an elevator in the middle. I tried to look for Jason, I saw him going through boxes.
I slowly walked to him, I didn’t want to seem out of breath or overly eager. I did like the idea of working with him to be completely honest. He didn’t notice me coming over, it was only when I picked up something he noticed. He turned and took the tool out of my hand gently. He closed the box and walked to the elevator. I followed him quickly and we went inside to fix whatever needed fixing.
He started telling me what needed doing as we went up. I could hear people working each floor we went past. It seemed as if most of the tower was damaged in some way.
“Alright girl given the fact Harris drafted you in, we need plenty doing. The main communication system is shot in some way; I’ll need your help for that. They told me you did some service in a communication squad.”
“Yeah I did some time with them in the Outer Rim. They were a good bunch, and they taught me some cool things. I can fix most communication equipment.”
“Good to hear, we need more hands on that one. I’ll drop you off at the system level. That’s where all the mainframes and consoles are for communicating.”
He looked up at the ceiling and started bobbing his head. There wasn’t any music but he might have been thinking about it. The elevator stopped and the doors opened to a large room.
“This is your stop Danielle, remember we need that dish is needed to contact the fleet. We need it online so get to work.”
He moved his hand to the door; I glared at him with a smile and walked out. He was right though, we needed the dish working. There was no one else in the room from the looks of it. There were two doors leading off on both sides. The consoles were right in front of me as I walked across from the elevator. The separate systems were on other consoles on the left and right of the rooms. I went straight ahead and noticed that it was red on key systems. The dish itself was damaged but the report said a team was working on it.
I focused on the system setting first; they were completely out of whack. The calibrations for keeping it in tune were dead. I sat down and I began to recalibrate them to the standard frequencies. I looked at the systems for ages and noticed that it had been hit by EMP. It was the only way you could take out a system that badly. I realigned it given nothing was actually wrong. The Shadows must’ve fried it during the attack and then damaged key points.
I spent the best part of an hour getting the system back in order. I was zipping backwards and forward to every console but it was a mess everywhere. Eventually I powered up the system with everything in working order. Then only thing that was left was the actual dish. I could hear the engineers outside doing the work still. The doors lead outside to the dish walkway. I had gone out there for air during the repairs; it was one walkway leading to the middle.
The dish itself had a stairway going around the main column and then spreading out. Near the middle of the main column, there were separate walkways. They were four walkways going off the main one. They all led to power supplies that gave it the ability to transmit. I got up out of the seat again after getting it working. I opened one of the doors and went outside. It wasn’t even near the evening yet and we were making good progress.
I walked to the platform that connected the walkway to the room. It was like a balcony with the walkway leading forward. I leant on the rail on the left side, I watched the engineers work. They seemed to have two of the supplies working again. I could see the blue energy like an FTL core flowing into the dish. There were cables leading from the power supplies up the main column. It connected far above into the dish itself. It was a massive tower and dish; it would be an easy target in a battle.
I looked around the top and I could see the marines setting up guns here to. They were high up on the dish levels they use for repair. There was a cold breeze up here but I never minded it. I liked the weather here hot or cold, there was a sense of peace to everything. I heard a surge from above on one of the power supplies. The cable suddenly lit up and the energy began flowing through it. I got a call on my com link suddenly. I looked to see it was from Harris, I answered it quickly.
“Danielle here, what’s up Harris?”
“You better get down here quickly; I’m in the capital building. The Mars Defence Fleet just entered the system and they’ve found something.”
“Ok I’ll be right there but do we know what they’ve found? And how did they contact us with the dish down?”
“They relayed it through our fleet, but as for what they found I don’t know yet. Just get down here and we’ll find out.”
I ran back through the door and towards the elevator. If they found the enemy fleet then they had to get out of there. They wouldn’t stand a chance if it came to a fight in space. I pressed the button and sent a message to the repair team saying the reprogramming was finished. The elevator stopped, which irritated me. The doors opened and Jason came inside just as quick as I did. He nearly bumped into me given he was looking at his com link.
I grabbed him and he suddenly looked up. He laughed and sighed slightly. He was expecting someone else or he was tired. I was hoping tired but he stepped to the left and stood next to me. We continued going down when the doors closed but it was an interesting day. I had been everywhere trying to get things back to normal in this place. Jason didn’t say anything but I was guessing he got the same message. During my day, going around I never saw his wife anywhere.
She must’ve gone to the dig site or maybe somewhere else. I was wondering what she did with her time while Jason was working. I’ve only seen them together a few times since I met them. He never really talked about her either; it made me think more the marriage was a sham. He probably married her out of pressure from people. His family maybe but I was trying to brave the question. In the end, I clenched my hands and asked him about her.
“Jason…where’s your wife? I haven’t seen her all day or since we’ve been here.”
“She’s studying whatever they found here, she never talks about it. It does annoy me Danielle before you think I’m lying to you or something.”
“I never said you were but I just wanted to know what she was doing is all. So she knows what’s here then, a bet she won’t say anything to you.”
“She won’t tell me…I don’t really care to be honest. I’ll save the colony and then find out what she’s working on. I think of it this way, if the Shadows want what’s here then we’ll find out anyway.”
He turned his view from me and stared up a little bit as we went down. He was right, if they wanted, a shit fight over this then it’s going to be something special. Everything seemed in the air again, the Beacon or whatever it is as well. His wife knew everything and even he couldn’t get anything from her. I had to think about what’s in front of me first, the defence of Vau. If we turned them away then we might have the time to find out.
If we all die then it won’t matter what we do in the grand scheme of things. The elevator stopped and opened on the ground level. Marines were running around trying to shift everything to the guns and positions. Whatever Harris wanted to tell us or what the Mars fleet found it had everyone scared. Jason ran through them and straight the door, I followed him and saw people packing up their gear. Even the stalls were closing at the military’s beckoning.
I knew things would kick up a gear but I had no idea it would be this soon. I looked up into the buildings and skyscrapers. I saw marines at their positions and manning the guns. The fighters and transports were flying everywhere. The transports had some light armour on wires below them. It was definitely military mobilisation; Jason had gone ahead to the tram. I caught up after seeing the sights of what was going on around me.
The tram was about to leave when I jumped onboard. Jason caught my hand when I nearly fell down and he pulled me towards him. There were a ton of marines on the train, he held me closely. They weren’t saying anything but these guys were from the Excalibur. They had the reputation of the complete the mission at all costs attitude. They seemed alright though, most of them were taking in the view. I did as well given it was beautiful as always.
Jason had his hands on my waist and on my shoulder. I didn’t mind but then again it was kind of crowded in here. I even saw marines on the bridge with rail guns. They must’ve brought the entire battle group down here. I looked up at Jason and he saw what I was seeing. He seemed concerned at it as well. Whatever we were, defending it wasn’t just about the colonists. I saw most of the armour head off on transports into the distance. They were going nowhere near the colony.
The evening wasn’t far off now, the late afternoon I thought would be quiet. Instead, we got complete chaos with everyone moving around. The tram carried on into the station, the marines disembarked and carried out the supplies. Jason ushered me out and we went down the stairs quickly. The capital building wasn’t far away, we ran along the streets to get back there. The capital building was now much more armoured and defensible. We ran inside with Harris waiting for us.
“Finally! You two took your sweet time getting here. The transmission came in and I want you to see it.”
He started walking along the corridor; the lobby we entered seemed no different. We hid during the battle inside the same battle torn hall. The corridor was at the entrance only; he led us through the building. There were quite a few corridors and rooms. This place was like an Italian manor in the design. The people out here certainly liked a number of different tastes. The paintings were of different places in Dark Space.
Harris finally stopped at a door and opened it quickly. He walked in with us not far behind. I got a surprise when I saw what was inside. There was another set of consoles with marines at there stations. They were looking at the transmission of the Mars fleet. They were looking for something but I Harris was going to tell us. He stopped walking finally turning around to sit on the table. The room was small with the consoles on the left of the door. The table was in the middle of the room with notes all over it.
I looked over at the message; Jason did the more obvious thing and went straight over. He leant on the chair of one of the marines. He studied the message with them closely; I was guessing we had no time left. I walked up to Harris who seemed calm about everything. He picked up a piece of paper from the pile of notes. He passed it to me; I gently took it and read it. It was information that the Mars fleet sent back to us but it was mostly combat data. They had picked up the fleet on their scanners. They went for a closer look; the Shadow fleet seemed to be moving slowly.
It also said that they were still advancing on Vau but on non-FTL engines only. I wondered why they were taking such a long time. They were either waiting for something or someone to let them know. It could be their agent is supposed to do something for them. I looked up from the paper; there was nothing else but ship data. We had most of that from our own scans. Harris gave me a funny look when I stared at him. He stared over at the others for a moment but then grabbed me quickly.
He led me away from them and into a corner. I was probably going to have to tell him everything. He had one arm on my shoulder and he was looking cautiously. I wasn’t sure how to tell him what happened in that dream. I didn’t even know if it was real or not. I go up the nerve when he started talking to me about it.
“Do you know something about why they’re going so slow?”
“I do in a manner of speaking. I think their leader contacted me and he called himself Dacanty. It was when I took that shot and went down. While I was asleep during treatment, I went into a dream of sorts. He spoke to me during that.”
“What did he say to you?”
Harris didn’t even seem shocked by what I said. He believed it without question, which made me think he didn’t believe everyone here either.
“He said that our defeat was certain, well not so much said as shown. There was a statue in a courtyard but I was on Valaria. It said Remember Vau 2133, meaning we lost the fight.”
He was probably screwing with my head but it did give me some reasons. I was beginning to think that their agent would clear the way for them. We had to find out who it was and what they were planning to do. Harris let go of me and leant back on the wall. He was thinking about what to do I guess. There wasn’t much that anyone could do until we knew who it was they were working through.
“Alright Danielle I have a new assignment for you. Find out who this traitor is; deal with them if you can. We can’t afford to have this vision of yours come to life.”
“I wasn’t going to believe me on that one sir. I’ll find out who it is in the time we have left. My money would be when they reach Vau the agent will act.”
“I’m inclined to agree with you but be subtle about it. The last thing we need is more panic or trouble in any way. Now get out of here and get some rest, I’ll send you the message to study.”
I nodded and walked towards the door. Jason was staring at me but all I did was smile when I looked at him. I turned away and stepped outside the door. I walked the corridor and I heard him running behind me. I didn’t stop for him, I kept moving out of the building. The night was now in full appearance with the blue stars. I noticed it when I came out, the sky was lit up with the blue aura. The stars rather blended into the blue.
Jason came out of the door and went down the steps towards me. I knew he was there but I didn’t turn to him. I had nothing to say, there were already people I suspected. His wife was one of them given she worked with the artefact. If he asked then I would tell him what my mission was. He had a right to know if I went for his wife. I didn’t want to kill any of our own people though. The reasons for this obvious betray was something I couldn’t make sense of in my mind. In the end, I decided not to ask but deal with them.
Jason took my arm gently and turned me to face him. I didn’t want to say this but he would force the issue. I wasn’t going to let anyone threaten this colony.
“What did Harris talk to you about back there?”
“I worked from some information I gained that there’s a spy in the colony. There going to clear the way for their invasion or at least we think that’s it.”
“A spy…who would betray us and destroy the colony? I don’t know anyone here who would do that.”
I was thinking the same among our people from the battle group. It had to be someone with high access in the colony. I was thinking maybe Lawrence but he’s a politician. They’re not useful to anyone military these days. That left the other senior staff along with the artefact study. I was leaning more towards those who were working with that thing.
“I don’t know but it must be someone who has access to the artefact. That’s what they’re after for whatever reason, so they’ll need someone who can get to it.”
“You’re thinking my wife and the others in the project. They do have top access around the colony so I can understand that.”
He was surprisingly understanding given what I was suggesting. I think he knew there was something I knew and no one else did. I was actually hoping that it wasn’t Cynthia but until we had proof we couldn’t be sure. I was wondering if he was going to confront her about it all. The look on his face was serious yet a positive outlook. There was something she weren’t telling him and I think he’d finally had enough. He hugged me suddenly; I gripped him not really knowing why he was doing it. He let go and walked away towards the living towers. I had a bad feeling on how this would end for us all.
I sat down on the steps and watched him go. He must’ve been upset a little by what we were thinking. He couldn’t not be upset by it. He seemed ok if not a little pissed off, I decided not to follow him. There are times were people need to be alone with their thoughts. If he needed me then I was here but I had to find that traitor. I looked back up at the stars, they seemed so beautiful to me. Yet I knew that they would be filled with the echo of war soon.
It was always an odd feeling waiting on the edge of a battle you couldn’t escape. I got up after a little while and walked along to the living towers. The streets and market were clear of people. I saw the odd marine keeping watch on the rooftops. As I made my way through the market, I heard a crying noise. It was coming from down an alley and I looked carefully. I saw Lawrence sitting there on a box; he was looking at photos. I walked down and he suddenly looked up at me.
I waved slightly and came closer but he smiled and nodded gently. I didn’t want to bother him but I had never seem him upset before. I dragged a box along and sat there with him. I looked over and saw that the photos were of his family. There was a child and woman in the photo with him. He passed the photo to me; I took it and looked at it with care.
“That’s my wife and child; they live back in the Alliance territory. I left because of the way things were run on my home world. I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you Danielle.”
“It doesn’t matter Lawrence…I know people out here have no love for the Alliance. You seem to have more reason than most people.”
“I was exiled by the Alliance commander. He was one of those hardcore military types. You would know them from your training and service I recon. I haven’t seen my family in six years. I know you’re trying to help us, thank you for that.”
He smiled again while still crying a little. I knew what he meant with the Alliance commanders. They were always hard assed about everything they did. The slightest bit of rebellion and they crushed it with exile or death. I was never comfortable with it; I was even offered a command. I rejected it because I didn’t want to end up like that. I wanted to help people not make them suffer as Lawrence has.
I gave him back the photo; it was the only memento he had left of his family. I wanted him to survive more than others now given he lost everything. He should see them again at least once in his life. If we all died in this attack, what would we have been fighting for here?
“I’ll get you back to your family Lawrence. I have a few favours in the Alliance brass. You’ll see them again when all this is over.”
“I appreciate that Danielle but you don’t have to do that. We’ll all be dead soon if they hit us hard, which they will. We can’t hold off an attack of that magnitude.”
“We can until the other fleets get here; the Mars fleet is just one. There are a few more coming yet; hopefully they’ll get here before we lose it all.”
He didn’t say anything but he did give a nod while staring at the picture. I didn’t leave him for a while, we both needed company in this night. Tomorrow would just be another day of hell and chaos. I didn’t want to think about anything else at the moment. Talking about family and friends seemed to work for me nicely. We sat there talking about our pasts and how he wasn’t always a politician. He actually started out as a social worker on Earth. He was an interesting person.
The next morning came and I was actually in my bed this time. I looked up and saw the light coming from the window over my bed. I got up and strangely, I heard nothing around me or in the distance. The colony was silent for the first time in ages. I got up out of bed with my scars hurting slightly. They always did when I first woke up; the one on my breast was the worst. I had taken a shot there in the Outer Rim, it turned out nasty.
I finally got up trying to find my armour and weapons. I never went outside in this place unprepared. When I was getting dressed there was knocking at the door. I had the leg armour on only but I had the tank top on. I walked out into the living room and answered the door. It was Jason standing there; he had an ill look on his face. It wasn’t angry or anything but it was like he was confused.
“I wasn’t expecting you after last night Jason.”
“Don’t worry about it Danielle…I was just confused and in disbelief. You know how I would be about my wife being a possible traitor.”
“Yeah I knew you wouldn’t take that well. That’s why I tried to walk away quickly to avoid the conversation.”
He laughed or at least tried to; I moved to the side and offered him an invite. He came inside without even hesitating; I closed the door as he looked around. I crossed my arms and leant on the door, he sat down on the sofa. I walked over to join him; it seemed to be a quiet day. He looked more comfortable now he was inside the room. I sat down slowly next to him; turning to face me, he still had the same face.
I tried to get him to talk about it but something was bugging him badly. I knew it was to do with me otherwise, he wouldn’t be here. He shifted closer to me, I wasn’t nervous because it was what I wanted. I didn’t know about him though, he seemed interested and then not. The kiss was something special though, if the guys found out I’d get loads of jokes. I just wanted to be blunt with him and say I wanted him right now. He beat me to it with a very big surprise.
“I want you Danielle and I think I can now that my wife has gone missing. She left a note saying the project for the artefact comes first.”
“She left you in other words to study that thing. What a nice woman you married. I’m giving up so let’s make it work Jason, for both of us before everything is lost.”
He smiled but looked confused again, he was being very ambivalent. His emotions seemed to be switching a lot, I made him happy and I knew that. If she wanted to leave him as she did then we’ll let her. It’s something that me and him would share better anyway. He moved closer to me and I took his neck. He took my waist and pulled me towards him, we had no one but each other.
He kissed me gently but it was enough to get me going. I grabbed him tighter and pulled him over me. I just dropped back on the sofa and he came on top of me. He rubbed up my left thigh and along the rest of my leg. I was gripping his back and pulling him down to me. I didn’t want to let him go at all. Having sex on the sofa wasn’t what I had planned but it works for me and him.
He lifted me up still kissing me; he stopped and looked into my eyes. He stroked my hair as it fell out of the ponytail. It was always shoulder length but I never liked it any shorter or longer. He played with it and touched my neck gently rubbing down to my chest. I took his hand and got up off the sofa. I led him into the bedroom and swung him around to the bed. I let go and he fell down onto the mattress, I came down on top.
I laid on him gently but he never let go of my waist the whole time. He placed a hand on my lower back and pulled me down gently. I kissed him again; he started to move my top up. I had nothing underneath so I was hoping he was ok with my body. He lifted it up and then took it off; I had nothing on my top now.
He didn’t even seem fazed by the scare on my breast. It was a part burn and gunshot wound. He moved up with me straddling him. He moved his hands up and across my chest and he clenched my lower face. I moved my hands down and started undoing my trousers. He saw this and rolled me over on the bed. I was on my back now; he pulled my trousers down slowly. I didn’t have any underwear on, which made him smile.
It slipped off easily and he leant back down on me. I was naked completely and yet he still had everything on. I couldn’t have that now, I undone his shirt and took it off. I followed up with his trousers not long after. I rolled him back over and jumped on top of him. It was strange to be naked completely and laying on him like this. I wasn’t even sure why but I leant down and moved his hands. I held them above his head and kissed him.
The time passed and we didn’t even go under the covers. Our motions of undeniable pleasure were too good to bother moving. His thrusts were with force but meaning and I felt every pulse. It went continued and when it did finally stop, I was laying there with him. We still weren’t under the covers, he was holding me. His hand was over my breasts, it was one of those moments you love forever. It was heading into the afternoon and the silence was broken.
I awoke to the sound of the machinery again. The crews were obviously getting back to work. We did still have positions to secure and make repairs. I got up leaving Jason there to sleep. I put everything back on and went out of the door. The corridor was busy again with the last few supplies to move around. I ran along to the elevator and stepped inside with some marines. I was playing with my hair a lot trying to get it sorted out. The guys behind started laughing a little, I looked behind and smiled. They knew what had been going on in my room.
The elevator stopped eventually, I jumped out and went outside through the lobby. Harris was waiting for me, he didn’t look happy I was late. When I stopped and looked at him, he seemed to cheer up a bit.
“Having early morning fun were we sergeant?”
“Um yes sir, if you want to call it that. I’m ready now though and I think I have lead.”
His face brightened up when I said that. He took my shoulder and we started walking. I saw that things were almost ready. The crates that covered the place seemed to disappear as people moved them quickly. I stared at Harris as he let go but continued to walk.
“So what’s the lead you have Danielle and it better be a good one?”
“All the personnel working on the artefact have gone missing. Jason’s wife has even left him for that thing, it’s just them and there was no reason for them to leave.”
“Sounds like they want to hide themselves. So you think the spy is with them?”
“It makes sense because the Shadows want the Beacon or whatever that thing is. The spy would have to have access to that and the entire colony. Everyone on that project has full access.”
He nodded slowly and looked down at the floor. He waved his hand and I followed him to the capital building. I Lawrence was about to get a shouting from him. I never thought that Lawrence would know anything about it. Harris went past the marines at the front door and straight into the lobby. He followed the same corridor we went down but he bypassed the room. After a few corners, we came to a long corridor entering another hall. There was a door at the far end and Harris went straight for it.
I tried to keep up with him but he was walking very quickly. He opened the door and Lawrence was sitting at his desk. He saw me behind him looking a bit worried about what was going to happen. Lawrence sat back in his chair and looked up at Harris.
“I take it you’ve heard about the artefact project then? The people who worked on that decided to leave on their own accord.”
“You knew about it all along and you didn’t tell Danielle. The spy is with them and whoever it is will give the Shadows an opening.”
Lawrence nodded slowly; he knew that as well but probably didn’t want to believe it. We needed to know the location of the dig site and go get whoever it is. Harris went forward but calmer now, he didn’t want a fight. We just needed to know who it was if anyone even knew. I stepped forward past Harris and went around to Lawrence. Taking his arm, I turned him to face me.
“Lawrence I need to know who it is. If you know who then tell us how to get there.”
“I don’t know who it is Danielle and that’s the truth. I wasn’t even told where the dig site was. Some executive from Earth took over when that was found. He classified the location of the dig site.”
He wasn’t lying and I let go of him. It could be the executive who was the spy. Then again if it was he wouldn’t have full access to the colonies systems. It had to be one of the team that was already stationed here. I let go of him and walked back behind Harris. They both turned to look at me leave. I walked down the corridor and Harris was running to catch up. I was thinking we had to cripple the Shadow fleet before they reached the colony. When he caught up with me, he stopped me walking.
I wasn’t sure anymore, whoever it was had got away from us. We needed to deal with the fleet and then whoever was the traitor. I had a plan but it was risky to do, if it worked, it would make our job easier.
“What are you thinking Danielle? If the traitors gone then the Shadow fleet has the advantage.”
“No they don’t…they think we’ll sit back at the colony and wait for them. I say we go and face them head on, tell the Mars fleet to wait. I’ll take my team and a few others I have an idea.”
I walked off to get the others; he did what I said and went inside the room we were in before. I hoped they would listen to him; this could be our only shot at some sort of victory. I walked out into the sunlight and saw Jason coming. He ran towards me as I walked down the stairs. He stopped as I looked up at him. His face dropped into a oh god what’s happened now.
“Can you go find Helen and Jennifer while I go get Toby?”
“Um yeah sure…what’s going on Danielle?”
“We’re going to take out the Shadow fleet; we need to slow them down at least. The traitor is with the artefact team and we can’t get to them. If we deal with the fleet then we can focus on finding them.”
“Alright then, any idea who it actually is yet? Or are we still playing a guessing game on that one.”
“Still playing a guessing game, just go get them and meet me at the shuttle ready to leave.”
He looked a bit confused again but he ran off to the living tower. I made my way to the medical centre; if Toby was going to be anywhere, it’s there. I ran along the streets that looked much better now. The medical centre wasn’t far away from the capital building. It was a two-story building with a tower coming from the centre. The door was open with some patients coming out. I walked in and saw that it had the similar setup to Prego.
There was a lobby with corridors on each side leading to the wards. A&E was stationed in the central corridor, there were rooms leading off with a central hall. I went down the middle corridor; people were running in and out of rooms. I had people coming across me from both sides. I continued down the corridor hearing Toby’s voice. I saw him eventually as I came into the hall.
He was treating a few patients and helping out the doctors. I waiting for him to finish wit the patients, as he walked away from one he saw me. He waved as he walked; I nodded and continued to wait for him. I hated disturbing him as he worked; it felt wrong on some levels. Some marines took the patients away and he came over to me. He took a breath and stood in front of me.
“What’s up Danni? Harris called before you arrived saying we’re heading somewhere.”
“Yeah we are, we’re heading to the Shadow armada. We’re going to cripple them before they reach the colony. It might buy us some more time to find the traitor.”
“Alright then sounds good, I’ll finish up here and meet you at the shuttle. I hope you’re right about this Danielle, a lot of lives are riding on what we do.”
He walked away and ran towards a set of new patients. I walked back through the door into the busy corridor. All that was left was to find the right supplies. This would be risky if it went wrong given it could kill us. With that thought in mind, I made my way out of the hospital. I would need specific things for this mission. I decided to visit the armoury next; they would hopefully have what I needed.
The colony seemed to be dying down know with people just moving things around now. I’ll give these people on thing, they can really fix things when they had to. We had set up a small armoury in the market district. One of the buildings there gave us the room to safely set one up. I walked along the streets and into the district and I saw that there was even a transmission from Valaria. It was playing across all the screens. Some people were even watching them, I didn’t stop though.
The marines there saw me coming and opened the door quickly. I nodded and went on through into the building. There were plenty of different things to take but I only needed one thing. I saw the quartermaster sitting at his desk sorting out requisitions. I leant on the table and he looked up putting the pad down immediately. He got up and faced me properly.
“Sergeant Lorel…what can I do for you ma’am?”
“I need some warheads corporal, some pretty powerful ones as well for a mission.”
“Ok…how powerful are we talking here and what type of mission is this?”
“I need the nukes we got here; Harris gave his authorisation to use them. We’re taking on the Shadow fleet and I need an ace in the hole.”
He looked shocked but he went and got the forms to fill in. Even in a bad situation like this, we still have forms to complete for things. He put it on the desk and I filled it in quickly. He took it back and went towards the back; I didn’t see where he went. I turned around and sat down on the desk to relax a little. After a little bit he came back with everything stamped and in order. He gave me the form and stood there waiting. He sat back down and then told me what to do with it when they arrived.
“They should be at the shuttle by the time you get there. Just show them the form when they arrive, they’ll know what to do with it.”
“Alright then, thanks corporal I owe you one for doing it on short notice. Let’s hope they make a difference in the fight against their fleet. Or at least give us some time.”
“Yeah you can hope for that Danielle but just watch your back out there.”
He looked back to his pad and I walked off with the form in hand. I got outside and placed it into my pocket. The message was still playing; even some of our people were watching it. I went to get my weapons from the living tower; it always felt like the days went fast here. It was falling night already but then again I was having sex. I carried on going to the living towers. The military were in great numbers now; they covered nearly every spot of the colony.
They weren’t going to let a single Shadow ship land. It was reassuring that things were being looked after carefully. I came out of the financial district and saw the living towers clear. I started running for the entrance, I had to be fat given the shuttle wasn’t far away. They would be locked loaded and ready to go by the time I got my gear. It took a while but I got through the entrance without anyone slowing me down.
I jumped in the elevator and went up; the sounds of working had stopped completely. Everything was ready for the assault; we had done all we could. If they got passed us in space then the colony would suffer. We had to hold the line at all costs. Then we can take down the spy and recover the artefact, whatever the damn thing is. The elevator stopped and I ran out to my room. The marines were at their positions just waiting for the attack. I opened my door and saw Dacanty on the sofa. I froze in the spot looking at him but closing the door.
He got up gently and calm over to me, I stayed still though as he stepped closer. He didn’t say anything but those eyes were fixed on me. The blue came out in the failing sunlight. He stopped not far from me and leant on the kitchen side. The sky suddenly went dark outside and turned to a red tint. It shone through the windows and across the room. I looked around quickly; the whole world began to change. The lights dimmed and everything went dark, I could still see with the red light.
I looked at Dacanty again and he smiled at me. I had nothing to smile about to him. He was here to give me a warning no doubt, before the big battle starts.
“This is more private than anywhere else. I wanted to talk to you again Danielle, before the end of everything. I know you’re coming to attack us but why waste your time. You know you can’t win against us, why fight an unwinnable war?”
“There’s no such thing, there’s always a way to beat the odds. You won’t win Dacanty and I assure you, you’ll die in the fight.”
“Such bravery, I admire that in people. It’s shame you’re not one of us, you would’ve made a good one. It doesn’t matter now, you’ll die and it’ll end.”
He started to walk away back to the sofa. I chased after him into the red light. I felt strange when I stepped into it, I felt weaker somehow. He turned around and laughed, I backed away from him. The light made me feel weak even while it wasn’t covering me.
“Humans like you never learn, we control this world and everything in it. I made this light across your room so you couldn’t do anything foolish.”
I didn’t say anything, it seems I needed strength to pass into the light. If he was controlling it then all I had to do was break the control. The light would be weaker and I could take care of this ass. I didn’t want to talk any longer, I wanted to stop him from finishing his mission. He turned away from me after saying his final piece. The room returned to normal with the red light fading and my strength returning.
My eyes closed and I heard the song again, my head felt dizzy and light. Eventually I dropped to the floor and laid there not able to move. I tried to force my eyes open but it took ages. When I finally id open them I saw that he was gone and it was night outside. I rose up slowly and looked around the room. My gear was on the kitchen side, it wasn’t there when I came in. I lifted myself to my feet and went towards it. There was a note with it, I picked it up and saw the name on the bottom. It was from Dacanty, I read it carefully and with it came a warning.
“I knew you would fight Danielle, but I never imagined you’d fight this hard. If you want a war however then I won’t deny you one. I hope you enjoy your last days alive, because I’m going to kill you if you get in my way. Dacanty.”
I put the note down as quickly as I picked it up. He didn’t want a fight but I couldn’t let him destroy the colony. This ends with the battle in space; we’ll cripple them before they reach us. I grabbed my gear and started it all on; I had a thought in the back of my mind. What if he was waiting for this attack? If we went straight for him then did he have some kind of plan to backstab us?
I wasn’t sure on it all, I got my com link out and sent a message to Harris. I recommended that we take only a small force from the colony. The Mars force could be our bulk, no need to risk the colony by taking more. We could finish this ourselves and I was going for a personal reason. I wanted Dacanty for what he did to this place, if he escaped then it’s over anyway. I grabbed my weapons and walked out of the door towards the elevator.
I went down still thinking of how bad this could end for everyone here. I told myself that we couldn’t fail at any cost. The door opened and I heard the shuttle outside, I ran out and saw everyone there. My entire team along with the nukes, I felt a sudden breeze of confidence. Dacanty and the Shadows wouldn’t know what hit them.
