Giant Impact

Payne Edwards

Terrorists acquire nuclear bombs while a secret private team tracks them, not to stop them, but to ensure their plan succeeds.

Radical environmentalists funded by an embittered billionaire team with an Al Qaeda cell supported by Iran, bound by their common cause of stopping the flow of oil to industrial countries. They steal Russian nuclear weapons and secretly plant them in the world’s sixth largest giant oil fields. Unknown to them, a secret private anti-terrorist team shadows their every move, not to stop them, but, for their own reasons, to make sure that the destruction of the oil fields is complete. When the bombs suddenly cut off a third of the world’s oil supply, causing turmoil in the global economy, it emboldens the Iranian president to make a nuclear play of his own. The terrorists and the private cell react and events spin out of control when the terrorists try to use their few remaining nuclear weapons to achieve their goals.

GIANT IMPACT / Payne Edwards

I was pulled in by this story's hook / pitch. While certainly a fantistical premise, after reading , I believe this is one of those stories that would make a blockbuster movie.

The writing here is quite good. Mr. Edwards knows how to keep a 'reader' reading. He ends his chapters in good spots, crafts his scenes well and his logistical knowledge is good. Essentially, it is just a damn good story.

I read all 16 chapters. I'm not going to mention any plot points here as I do not wish to give away any details and ruin the experience for futher readers. I will say, the plot is deep, the characters are many, one must pay attention with this one or there are details to be lost. This IS NOT A BOOK TO SKIM THROUGH. Of course, I had no problem reading every word.

Characters in this story are introduced to support a theme on an as needed basis. The author does this well. There are many that because of their role require no backstory past a simple intro, which helps keep the narrative balance away from heaviness usually associated with a story that has this many characters. I think the author remained mindful of this at all times, being careful to move his story forward constantly, aware that the use of this many characters would become a burden if he did not.

All in all, this is a good one. Certainly worth the read. I'd like to know what happens on in the book but I guess I'll just wait and see the movie.

Stars for GIANT IMPACT, as it sure made a giant impact on me. Nice work, good writing, string characters, good plot, economical word usage, clever and crafty approach to a most fantastical premise. Good Job!!
