Burn

Carrie Frost and Kelly Reynolds

One shape shifter, two partners, one arsonist, and only one chance to stop him.

Marqui O’ Connor is a detective that works for the F.B.I. who just happens to be a werewolf. A mad arsonist is burning down small cities in Oregon and only she can stop him with the help of not only her animalistic senses, but also with the help of her half Navajo partner Casey Silvereyes. Casey is in love with Marqui and would do anything to protect her. He harbors a secret of his own that he has never told anyone about except his family. When the arsonist targets Marqui and those around her they have to do anything in their power to stop him, even if it means revealing their deepest secrets to each other. It’s a battle of wits and strength against a creature just as peculiar as Marqui, another shape shifter with only one thing on his mind. Fire and his dark obsession with Marqui.

Dear Carrie and Kelly,

I just loved the way you jumped headlong into the action.
On reading the pitch, I was a bit apprehensive. My concern was that a protagonist who’s a werewolf herself might detract from the horrific nature of the antagonist who’s usually the focal point of any horror-thriller novel.

Reading on, I realised that I was wrong.
The story moved at a frantic pace and I threw my unfounded worries to the wind as I joined the chase to capture the devious villain, a character that became more and more complex and intriguing as the narrative progressed. Marqui herself is no less interesting as everything about her (including her transformation) felt very real. Casey’s character is a great addition to the cast as his composure brings the right balance to Marqui’s feral aggression.

The first chapter took me right into the heart of the plot. Despite the fast pace, I never missed out on details and never had to read a sentence twice. The writing is sharp and edgy, and apart from a few typos, I could spot no major errors.
The second chapter was simply brilliant.

I’m pleased to award 6 stars to ‘Burn’ and look forward to reading it after your next edit.
It’ll stay on my WL for further reading and possible backing next month.

Best regards,
AGC

I like how you handled the details of the scene , and how you set the character of Marqui (I liked him better than Wells). Your use of dialogue is a realistic one and it clearly is a tool of characterisation for you. And you use it well.. by the end of the chapter, I can picture the face one talking just by reading what they say!

The Navajo is a nice touch to it all. Casey adds color to the duo Marqui -Wells, and I the idea of Casey in love with Marqui is a prolific one. A love story in the middle of a chase... nice...

It is a good start and I can see the readers of the genre being drawn into your story. 5 stars from me to get you started in the site :) Welcome and enjoy :)
