416

Edited by Splinker

Every story is exactly 416 words long. They are all horror. They are all fantastic. Trust but verify.

There has never been an anthology like this. A special Halloween treat. All horror. All 416 words long. Inspired by Authonomy's contest and my genius, "416" is a unique collection of horror short shorts. You could do a lot worse than spend a few hours reading these beauties.

The only rule is no Joan Rivers. Some horror stories should never be told.

Special thanks to DragonLady for designing the cover!

This was an amazing competition that produced some awesome work by the best and brightest here on Authonomy. This is a great compilation that demonstrates some of the pure talent that populates this site. Thanks for it, Splinker!

This is a very intelligent line of thought and I enjoyed it.. This is going to do well on here I feel. Great voice that the readers are going to enjoy and a nice flow to it. Well done. I am only giving my opinion as opposed to a critique. I read eight chapters.

Just read the first story in the collection. They have some potential. Develop the characters more from real people and this really will kick.

First chapter may have a bar based in some truth. Well there is a special bar in New Orleans called "The Dungeon" that could possibly have this occur. Especially after the patron drank dragon's blood.

I dowonder why 412 and not 666 though for short stories of horror?--JL "The Devil Of Black Bayou"

These stories were cool.
Some of them were wild!
What a great idea!

Candymace wrote 492 days ago

A super idea. I can come back to it again and again without losing the plot! Candy.

ironinthesoul wrote 539 days ago

Neat idea this. Those of us with the attention span of a gnat can enjoy a whole story, bite-size! Excellent compilation.

Hello Splinker--

book- 416-

Had no trouble flashing through loads of these great short stories; and how enjoyable they are.
poetry in horror is the thought that comes to mind.
A book to pick up and put down at a whim, or to get an instant fantasy read.
I like it.

How cool is this! A massive variety of styles and content.

Licudi wrote 570 days ago

And what's wrong with a bit of Joan Rivers! A perfect book as a halloween gift. If you don't get on with one story, there are plenty more to choose from. I'd like to see other genres too, like romance, erotica, thriller organised in a similar way.

BabyStar wrote 577 days ago

Very apt entry for chapter 13. That's some creepy s***...!

sixpence wrote 577 days ago

A perfect book to dip into again and again. Sheer delight and shivers in equal measure.

Tito wrote 577 days ago

This is such a good idea! I wonder if other books will follow in the same format in different genres. It can allow so many otherwise neglected authors to be seen. Some excellent flash fiction here.

Sharon Somers wrote 578 days ago

This was an amazing concept. The stories are all well written.

EMDelaney wrote 578 days ago

I just noticed that 416 has fallen off the 'Weekly Top Rated List's top five' for the first time since it was uploaded. That won't do. Come on folks.......6 stars please..

JoMount wrote 581 days ago

Such a good idea! I wasn't sure you could create a spooky story in so few words but this collection is quite creepy. On my bookshelf.

Cosmicdancer83 wrote 581 days ago

What a wonderful idea! Brilliant for coffee breaks. If this was published in print it would allow so many writers here to become published authors. So many different styles and ideas. Love it!

Seb Scully wrote 582 days ago

Fantastic idea, this should defo get published, such a cool and unique addition to bookstores. All the stories are tight and haunting. Backed till it gets to the eds desk.

This is a brilliant book. Short, deliciously subtle, scary stories. What more can a book of horror stories be! Great stuff, showing some incredibly talented writers. Wish I'd read it earlier. Backed with stars and on w/l.

Thanks for pulling us all together, Splinker. I can see this ace anthology landing on the desk at Christmas - just in time for a 416-word Carol!

Highest rated book in Authonomy history(?) This ought to silence the Global Warming crowd and convince skeptics that eating carrots indeed does improve eyesight.

Splinker wrote 585 days ago

So we're up to 60+ stories. I'll still take submissions but I'm considering putting the book up on Kindle for free downloads, assuming I can get everyone on board. If that happens, I'll have to close the submission deadline early. I'm also limiting total entries to four and, if you are submitting after last Friday's FFF contest, then three total.

You people rock.

Hot from the presses at FFF 416 this deserves a backing if anything does. Some of our best and most inventive writers, (myself included, of course), have teamed up under the direction of the Grand Puppet Master himself to send a shiver up the most rigid spine. So tune in, crack open a bottle of medium reliable hooch and celebrate the season in style. A toast...To Splinker!

HORRIFIC!!!

SRWENT wrote 586 days ago

This is what this site is all about. Let the ideas flow and compete to do your best. To write a clear story in 416 is a challenge and stimulating. All whom read these stories should give it a try. It builds self confidence and is a challenge to do. Every one should give it a try.

gms1983 wrote 586 days ago

Gosh, that secret bonus chapter 57 is a shocker. The original author must be turning in his grave! I'll fetch the shovel... poor man...

It's an honour to be part of such a cool project. You are all on my Halloween dinner party fantasy guest list.

Unfortunately, I only have fantasy dinner parties. People are too scared to look for my house in the pitch dark. And I have no doorbell.

EMDelaney wrote 586 days ago

E A Poe would be proud I think. Hawthorne on the other hand, would contend the book needs editing.

Wonderful idea - fantastic idea to be able to dip in and read a short story...

Sharon.v.o. wrote 587 days ago

1. Will Jones: "The Moon" Methinks he will not wake up in the morning packed in ice and missing a kidney.. I would say that the drink should be “sat” on the bar not lay. Well written, very sensual.

2. Verse Artiste: "Eternity" He left her hanging and bleeding like a prize buck at the end of deer season. Reminded me a bit of Silence of the Lamb”. “It puts the lotion on itself and puts it back in the basket” Same kind of creep factor. Nicely done.

3. Sharon v.o. "Succubus Kiss" This ones mine “cough”.

4. D. Dickson: "Window" Some great imagery, especially liked the 2nd para. I want to know what the mist is and what it gets from suffocating her. I want more!

5. rt: "Flies" Oh, that was good. I was not expecting that ending. Her calm and composure leads me to believe she has done this before or will again. I love the fact that she did not get away with it.

6. D. Dickson: "Stoned" This was sad. Being separated from a loved one will drive people to do any manner of things, but to be stoned for it? Ah, heartbreaking. Made me cry a bit.

7. Stephanie King: "The Green Eyed Monster" I would say this woman ranks rather high on the ‘bunny boiler scale’. Creepy. I almost feel sorry for the guy…almost..

8. Rose Wall: "Eternal" Going silently into the dark night… Resigned to her fate. Even when predators are brought down, it’s still sad.

9. Will M. Jones: "The Bar" The 2nd ending reminds me of a Quentin Tarrentino movie. Very good, disturbing. I wonder if the drink he left on the bar had had human blood in it?

10. Sharon v.o.: "Immortal Beloved" Oh, hey look, this one’s mine also..ahem..

11. Paul Freeman: "Howl At The Moon" I love werewolf stories, always have and Paul can always be counted upon for a good story.

12. Quenntis: "Proverbs...." That was disturbing. Well written, but disturbing.

13. Dragon Lady: "Baby Monitor" . That made me laugh!

14. LuvsikPuppy: "The Runaway Elevator" hehehe…love in elevator…

15. Raymond Terry: "Ripley's Headache" The male version of Sybil. Hopefully, Katherine goes along with this plan or she might end up in that well anyway. Good job.

16. Wispy: "Pursued" And so the hunter becomes the hunted. Loads of tension, nicely done.

17. Mimic: "Death Always Collects" Oh, I have had Siamese cats before. They seem to have more personality then any other breed. I really liked this, poignant. Good job. I will say that you have a small typo “we aren’t as noisy as our canine cousins”. You have “are” in lieu of “as”. Also, would a cat admit to being a cousin to a dog? Counterpart might work better. Still very good. I liked it a lot.

18. TRM: "The Chair" I have a sudden aversion to orange leather chairs. Nicely done. original

19. S.C. Thompson: "The Dawn of A New Day For Ima Spatz " I love this title. The imagery made my teeth ach and my throat crawl with the feeling of beetles.

20. EM Delaney: "416" should be “of which they accuse me”. Oh, it’s just a very bad dream. I like the 416 incorporation. Very clever.

21. Living Challenged: "Handy Man" I rather suspected this would end up badly for the man. I wonder what she did, and does with his other parts…

22. Sammyhksmith: "Diamonds" I have always been partial to colored gemstones myself. Poor girl…good job, Sammy.

23. M. Basson: "It Ended With A Bang" A well written story the evokes a visceral reaction. Glad he is dead. Now just keep in mind, no body no crime…

24. GMS 1983: "Zombies in New Orleans" Ah, the things that go on in the bayous and swamps of New Orleans. This was fun to read.

25. Kaysielynn: 'The Return" She didn’t know she was dead. Good story.

26. Will M. Jones: "Variation on a Theme, 11 Lorena Bobbit the vampyre. I am amazed that you have managed so many great endings to the same story. Nicely done.

27. Lisa Scullard: "Hellbait" I feel like I have been thrown into the middle of a story. I want to read more!

28. Dragon Lady: "Aftermath" This was very sad.

29. SRWent: "Pushin'" I have never been to the Wall, but I can Imagine it is very poignant. I thought of this image when I read it.

http://www.agodblessedman.com/pics/vietnam_memorial.jpg

30. Mark R. Faulkner: "It Started With A Kiss" Like “It Ended with a Bang” It evoked a visceral, stomach turning reaction.

31. Paul Freeman: "Norse Zombie Vengence" I read this when it was just regular mortal Vikings. I think I like the zombie twist better.

32. Rebecca Tester: "The Muffin Man" I liked all the different elements of this story. Good job

33. Will M. Jones: "The Picture" I really liked this. And agree with some other comments this could be a full length story. I want to know what is going on here.

34. KA Smith: "A Snotball's Chance" Cheaters never win. Poor kid, I want to know what his parents named him. I kept thinking of Johnny Cash and “A Boy Names Sue”. He shot his dad I believe.

35. Ryan Holmes: "Salt of the Earth" So um maybe she should have thought her plan through a bit better. Good story though.

36. S.C. Thompson: "Flight 2341, Belize to Dallas, TX. " All I can say is “ewwww gross” Good old fashioned guts and gore horror.

37. Wispy: "Why I Don't Like Dolls" Good and creepy. I’ve never been into dolls either. And those Teddy Ruxbin things just freaked me out.

38. Lindseyp: "The Grange" Oh spooky.

39. Quenntis: "Revelations" I like this. That concerns me!

40. Quenntis: "It Started With A Kiss" A story, 416 words and in poem form. Very clever.

41. William Holt: "It Started With A Kiss" Love, parasites and girl shaped ether. Very good, Bill.

42. gms1983: "Witches, Demons and Magi, oh my" I like the characters and would gladly reading something that offers more of them.

42.5 Will MacMillen Jones “Old Memories” This was left out for some reason… Tree-haunted shadow. It’s empty because it’s cold. Not the other way around. Good story, Will.

43. Kira Morgan: "Feeding Time" Good story, Kira.

44. Splinker "Softly I Step" I love the suspense of what is going to happen.

45. DDickson "One Last Look" I really like this. I have been in caves in South Dakota and Colorad. There is always a part to the tour when the turn the lights out. The darkness is so profound your mind can’t comprehend it. Good job.

46. Mark Faulkner: "True Love" Well, I said it before and will say it again…ewww gross. I know I sound like girl, but still…gross. Good story though.

47. Quenntis: "Still Time" This was funny and disturbing.

48. Verse Artiste: "Pain" Lilian’s stories are always good. As this one is. I wonder how long the woman can hold out, sacrificing herself for these unknown women, before she screams for help and damns them all.

49. Wispy: "Billy and the Afternoon Visitor" Oh, intriguing.

50. Verse Artiste: "Midnight Snack" Ha, the baby ate the rat. Didn’t see that coming.

51: Wispy: "Spiders" * shudder * I hate spiders.
