The Lucky Necklace

Bre Gottschalk

Today is Julia's first swimming lesson but when she loses her lucky necklace an unlikely friend helps her look for it.

5 year old Julia hates wearing her water wings, so her mommy made her a deal. If she takes swimming lessons then she won't have to wear water wings any more. to ensure that all goes well, Julia puts on her lucky necklace, but when she loses it in the pool, a mermaid takes her to the depths of the ocean to find it, where she meets many new creatures. Like the first in the Julia series, "The Treasure Chest", children from pre-k to grade three will love the imaginative nature and fun adventures that Julia experiences.

This is fantastic! I think this is going to be a hit with your target audience. You have mastered the voice of the child and that is something that is difficult for some children's writers to do.
Only one thing ( and this is just personal opinion- I am no expert or I wouldn't be here. lol! ) ;)
I wouldn't start all the opening paragraphs with "Julia..." switch it up a bit. That's all. :)
Great story,Good job and Well-starred!
Blessings and best wishes,

Hi! Finally managed to swing around to your story, I think its really cute. It kind of reminded me of a "sea world" story I once wrote when I was a kid. But I was little confused at; "I would be honoured to give Q Pearl my treasure but what may I get in return? The other clams will laugh at me for not having my own treasure." It kind took me awhile to figure out who said that.
Anyways, I rated u 4 stars.
Good luck with the story!

What an adorable story. I am sure this will be delightful to many children. Your words danced across the pages with magic and song. I wish you the very best on this book. It is one I woud buy for my granddaughters..They love this type of book.
Kind Regards.

I agree with Ophelia below. I would consider making some of the sentences shorter and more concise. I am saying this simply because you are aiming at such young children with this book. Pictures are going to be vital too. Do you have this illustrated and is there a link? I would love to see them! Penguin Publishing has a great website(I've been told from professors) that has what teachers call "leveling" informtation. It talks about how to identify what reading level is right for certain texts. It may help you identify ways to change around your text to make it an easier read for little kids. A really great idea and I can see how this has caught on so well! Best of luck with it!

P.s. Wanted to thank you again for the backing! It means a lot!

I guess my kids must have been picky readers but I don't think they would have gone for this plot line, as ridiculous as that sounds. It's sweet, to be sure. It's set up in lengthy paragraphs like a chapter book meant for older elementary but the language is definietly preschool. Maybe work on the form?

Walked out to the pool hiding (should this be holding?) her mommy’s hand
They had told her that they had passed a giant clam – to me it’s like you switch tense here? The story is happening as we read so I would take the first ‘had’ out
Just as adorable as the other one – six stars from me :-)

This is such a cute story!! It would really capure their little imaginations (It certainly captured mine!)
Clams cheering, waving octopus & sting ray, fun with tickly bubbles. So so cute Bre!
Six sparkley stars for now
