Taine

J. H. McQuarrie

A satire on the meaning and value of Honor through two opposite brothers, set in a chillingly real parallel world.

The outwardly ostentatious, inwardly bitter second son of the king of a vast empire, Shique, has raised himself by his own code- Honor. When the decision comes between saving the kingdom he loves and murdering his older brother, he is forced to define what he had simply defined as doing what is right. A dirt poor girl called Skai, masquerading as a male to get through each day in the slums of Shique's empire, lives to care for her brother. A cloudy past choice leaves them both caught in a bloodthirsty gang, murderers and thieves to survive. This short story is a crisp, blunt satire on the meaning of honor, values, and their true role in society. It forces the reader to contemplate the definitions themselves, answers that prove there is no objective morality.

This story literally hits the ground running with a shocking opening that holds true to the author's pitch. The imagery is done well enough to put the reader on the scene. I couldn't help giggling while reading this because you've certainly captured the language of the satire...When the prince puts on the pauper's clothes and leaves the palace, I wonder if his path will eventually cross with Skai's ?
