Kill Club

David Jack Smith

The members suck. Getting in is murder. And there’s only one exit... Welcome to Kill Club.

Oxford University 1999… an alpha sociopath identifies and recruits five others into Kill Club. Their first victim is Ezekiel Gunn, younger brother of Micah Ishmael Gunn. Having joined the Royal Marines aged 18 as a commando and battlefield medical assistant, today Micah’s a nurse at St. Michael’s Hospital, just down river from Parliament. Oh yeah: Gunn can double tap you with a Browning 9mm -- then help save your life. When a barely alive man is ambulanced to St. Michael’s, Gunn discovers he has the St. Christopher he gave his brother 14 years earlier. Only one problem. A paranoid schizophrenic confessed to murdering Ezekiel in 1999; and has been locked up ever since. Naturally Gunn investigates, putting everyone in danger. His younger sister Bathsheba and her RADA ambitions. His former marine mate, Eddie Bishop, the multi-millionaire property mogul with the two foot long dreads. The macabre-obsessed, foul mouthed Chinese nurse Ziya Zhang -- and her growing relationship with Gunn. The sparky, about to be married Jockette, who once burned a flame for Gunn. His mentor and friend Dr Daniel Mosser. All become targets as Gunn unravels the secrets of Kill Club. And plots his revenge. With a triple twist.

HBJ (hottest books June) review

David,

Whoa. This is some hundred-miles-an-hour, don't-let-grandma-know-what-you're-reading, no-shirkin'-on-the-gorey-details read.

So, I'm reading all the books on the HBJ list. I hope you take it as a compliment that I did a considerable amount of skimming, here. Because you're imagery is that good, and I don't like those sorta things running around pell-mell in my brain. The pace is very high-energy and you have a good mix of interesting characters. And if the reader isn't committed by the bomb you drop in ch. 3, well they're probably me: squeamish, and not your target audience anyway.

Scary good writing.

David Jack,

I should start by mentioning that I've been reading crime/thrillers for thirty years - like every week (I rarely watch TV). I've read to the end of the fourth chapter and I believe you've got the makings of a fine story here. I like the snappy dialogue and the characters, especially the Chinese nurse and Jockette.

But it still needs working on.
Prologue: I would consider changing 'The first' and 'The others'. Finding better names. These don't excite the imagination. Think Hannibal Lecter. I'd also consider cutting the first bit and starting at the paragraph 'He had observed her ...'
Chapter 1 At a time when the story needs forward momentum we have a lot of description of London and family. It slows the pace and there's no hook at the chapter end. Why have it? The chapter could be scrapped and family info given as and when needed.
Chapter 2 John Hopkins should be Johns Hopkins.
Chapter 3 I like your use of action verbs. Span should be spun.
Chapter 4 Again this chapter ends rather tamely.

Overall I like it and will be back to read more. I'm giving it a run on my shelf.
