Journo's Diary

Chris Thomas

Sexy, saucy, sassy! Journo's Diary is a tale of baked beans, bad flatmates and love gone wrong...

As cadet journalist Rick Hughes stumbles through his new job, he has a few problems. Well, more than a few. A seemingly forgettable New Year's fling preys on his mind as he soon discovers the woman he slept with is a wanted criminal.

This is matched with his less than brilliant start with the Weekend Star and his constant inability to actually ask any women out on a date. And George, his flatmate, is a royal pain in the behind.

Journo's Diary is the day-to-day chronicle of Rick's life as he tries to cope with it all, a job made increasingly difficult when the criminal woman he slept with becomes a major news feature. Things get much, much worse before they get even remotely better...

Hello,
The journal is written in a lovely style that really captures the main character's voice. On the whole, it makes for a very enjoyable read, though I think the decision to make the whole thing into a journal is quite a brave one since there is inevitably an element of repitition in people's day-by-day lives. In addition, if someone has written an entry in their journal then you know they have, at least, survived another day, so some of the tension is taken away.
There is an uneasy blend of thriller and humour in your chapters. The humour aspect certainly makes it an enjoyable read, although it lightens the more serious side of your protagonist's foray into criminal affairs. Similarly, if it were all humour (in the style of Adrian Mole or Bridget Jones), you might lose the originality of your angle, so I'm not sure what to suggest. It is good fun and exceedingly well written though, and your characters are engaging and human.

Chris, this is really funny - I love your 'stream of consciousness' style and the promisingly convoluted plot. My only observation is a slightly pedantic one, viz, would you normally include dialogue in a diary entry?

In any event, this is something I'd read to the end, thus worthy of a spell on my shelf.
Cheers!
Faith

ps: Chris, one small thing... throughout it keeps showing 3/4 signs. This looks like a typo. Perhaps take a look at that. Best, Nikki

Hi Chris,

just checked your novel as you made friends with me! Really enjoyed it- it's almost like a male Bridget Jones (don't take that as an insult as I really like Bridget Jones). I think you've got the humour perfect and Rick sums up all the normal insecurities people have when they start a job. I just hope you have some slightly crazier things for the future of this as it will need a shake up eventually!

I'm shelving this as it made me laugh.

I do hope you'll be able to check out Ellipsis at some point. Any feedback would be great.

All the best Chris, Nikki

Placing this on my revolving shelf.
