Tuesday's Ring

Tim Randle

Michal is a Detective Inspector with Polish ancestry and lives in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire's East Midlands

This novel is supported by research into Polish families escaping the German advances in 1939. It deals with a successful modern detective and his family. His teenage children show signs of letting ‘old’ values slip, values that are very important to Michal. An exciting narrative shows how personal Michal’s enquiries become. Michal Kaczynski is a Detective Inspector of Polish origin, a resident of Melton Mowbray in the East Midlands. The author was born and bred in Melton Mowbray. He knows that there is a sizeable Polish community in Melton; where on market day as much Polish is heard side by side with English. In a sub-plot, Michal’s mother tells the story of the family escaping from Poland to her grandchildren. A special feature is the variety of Polish food that Kasia, Michal’s wife, serves.

Why start off at Chapter 5? Not knowing what the missing chapters contain, I will say I've been able to pick up the thread from the pitch and what's here. There are still some little quirks in the dialogue and the way you move the characters around. One downside comment - example being the opening of chapter 12 - is that there are times when you pass information to the reader (the first paragraph) and then repeat it a little in the dialogue between characters (Michael and Tessa Marmion.) It is bound to be smoothed out in the edit, but worth having a look as you go.

As for the storyline? There's certainly a good story here, but don't be afraid to let your characters have emotions now and again, and to open things out a little more.

Read and enjoyed, backed, and would like to see more when available.
