Ruth, I don't get to spend much time reading and was happy to find myself pulled into the main character right away and her dilemma. I like the tone, the mood, the use of language I don't read every day, and the pace. I didn't read all of it (yet) but look forward to it. I don't know much about the time period you write about but what you wrote is well written--one gets a great sense of the time, the people, the sadness, the main character's love and loss. I admittedly got snagged up on the spacing after commas, but that's the journalist in me; am assuming that's a style.
