Nancy C. Johnson and Victorine E. Lieske both Indy authors and regulars at Kindle boards have just made it to the NY Times best seller list. I'd say that's a pretty big accomplishment for going the self published road. They are currently ranked #9 and #16 on the list. Congrats you two.

The cool part about this, is that you can be a best seller and just publish your book on the Kindle without the help of an agent or publisher. Several of our fellow Indy's are also on the USA today best seller list. I'd say self publishing is coming of age.

You also can win in a lottery ticket without buying a ticket. There also was a man in the Bible, Enoch, who never died because God took him alive to heaven.

Don't delude yourself, guys. This is just an exception. They are good marketers. Hope is dim for an average self-published writer.

Thanks, Mark, for the reminder that people need to be above average to succeed.

Not only that, Jason, but you must work hard on it. My favorite quote:

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
- Calvin Coolidge

You're preaching to the choir, and I agree with what you're saying. Maybe my perspective is more optimistic.

It is a market your book or die world, even in so called traditional publishing. In fact, I've heard that in many cases those authors are often left to do their own marketing, much like the self published. However, if one believes in their book, their writing, and keeps at it, there is hope because even if they never sell a single copy they have achieved personal success merely from doing what everyone says they could do; get a book in print. After all, if you dont believe in yourself, who will? Use ear plugs when the boos are thrown, yet listen when constructive remarks are made, and all things are possible.
Just my rambling thoughts.... Elizabeth Matson, author of Pieces of the Past
