Hi there - just extending the ink-stained hand of friendship.

I'm still fairly new to the site, but I've found it to be an extremely constructive and rewarding experience so far, though it does pay to have a thick skin sometimes.

Backing books, making friends – that seems to be the way to raise the profile, so here I am. It would be fantastic to hear from you.

All the best, have a great day - Cas

PS: If you do happen to get the uncontrollable urge to look at either of my books, here are the links
http://authonomy.com/books/42586/slow-poison/
http://www.authonomy.com/books/42590/bloodstones/

Slow Poison is dark and brutal, Bloodstones is a gentler read, but gets tougher as the story progresses. A little like Larsson, Welsh, Niffenegger I have been told. (…but I haven’t read any of their work yet…so you’ll have to be the judge of that…)

I started a thread for the hottest books uploaded in March and you made the cut.
http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/96474/hottest-books-march-addition/
I'll update the list every two weeks.
Stop by and talk about your book or another book, or just start a tire fire in the thread. There is no such thing as bad publicity.

Ciaran,

I was pleased to be able to read some of your book, so left a brief comment with a few things for you to look at.

It would be really good if you could read a little of my book and maybe leave a comment. Eggs-Cell Files is an unusual look at prejudice, uses an extreme example woven into a story and has a quirky blend of humour, romance and adventure.

I hope you enjoy the read and have a great time on Authonomy.

Best wishes
Warrick

This is an invitation to post the opening of your book or novel in the forum thread “If I were an agent, I’d stop reading…now.”

http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/82641/if-i-were-an-agent-i-d-stop-reading-now-/?pagenumber=1

After you post your opening, we will read it as if we were an agent who had requested a partial from you. If we see something, a grammatical error, a cliché, awkward phrasing, we will stop reading. Unlike a real agent, we will explain what made us stop.

If you choose to post your opening in this thread, please keep in mind that few if any of us are experts and only you know what is best for your book or novel. The main purpose of this thread is to help you get some honest feedback, and perhaps gain some readers and backers.

This thread currently has 300,000 vews. Why? I’d like to say it is because Autho users like to stop by to peruse excerpt and find new reads, but in truth, the biggest reason this thread is so popular is that people love a circus.

They love conflict and drama and this thread provides it in the form of Authonomy’s resident banned troll, Jay too/JG/JG1/Skid Chains, et al. The way it works is like this, JG thinks he is an expert and that he alone knows the proper way to write. If he comments on your writing, if you get JG’d as we say, consider it to be a bizarre initiation, or ritual hazing. Other writers will likely come to your defense and you will get more attention for your work.

While all this conflicts does draw many eyes to the thread, it also means that your opening can get lost in the shuffle. I encourage you to re-post as often as you want until you’re satisfied with the amount of feedback you have received.

Best of luck

Will you fight for CUPID (god of sexual love) leading men or for LIBERTY FAIRY leading women in this greatest Third World War?

1) Hear the two greatest orations, one by CUPID and the other by LIBERTY FAIRY in the final battlefield in Third World War, and then join the battle!—read chapter: 15
2) Win a Nobel prize if you solve any of 11 unsolved riddles! Also know the darkest mystery about ‘After Death’.—read chapter: 14.
3) A golden treasure of 100 new Emerald proverbs and novel, naughty quotations on sex, sexual love, marriage, read chapter: 3.
4) For the strangest ‘Preface’, never read by you till now, read the sarcastic conversation between YOU as the scathing reader and ME as the defending author in chapter: 5.
5) If you are a lover of traditional rhymed volcanic and lyric poems (like those of Alfred Tennyson), read my 37 poems in the chapter: 17.
6) For 100 most revolutionary novel ideas in Election Manifesto of Angels Party, read the two most important chapters: 10 and 11.
7) For ‘Sexual Revolution for sexual ecstasy for all’ revealed by CUPID against ‘Eternal Bliss by Raja Yoga with six other Yogas and about ‘Many Evils and 3 Jails by Sex’ by LIBERTY FAIRY, read the full e-book.

Will you echo the noble appeal of LIBERTY FAIRY to as many friends as possible?

Emerald,
Author of Third World War.

Welcome to Authonomy, Ciaran!

Would you perhaps be interested in taking the time to read, rate or back Miss Manners?

I'd be so grateful for your support - it would mean the world to me!

Miss Manners has climbed the ranks from 5000 to 500 in less than 2 weeks, entered the Top 100 in under a month and the Top 20 in a month-and-a-half on the Editor's Desk chart! But with your support, we can take it all the way to the ED!!!

Wishing you and all your loved ones a happy, healthy and prosperous 2012! May all your dreams come true!

P.S. I'd be more than happy to return the read!

Hi Ciaran,

Welcome to Authonomy! You’re probably already receiving lots of messages for read requests and/or chapter swaps. It can be a touch overwhelming but it’s a great way to get your feet wet and your book seen! Another fantastic place for that is the forum – find a reading group that fits your genre or tell people about your book in the “shameless plugs” section. The FAQ’s link at the very bottom of the page was extremely helpful to me when I first started on here. It explains the ranking systems etc. But if you have any questions I would love to help you if I know the answer! (:

If you have a chance, feel free to check out my book Memoria. It’s a young adult sci-fi novel set in a utopian dystopia. Kind of an oxymoron but you’ll see what I mean if you read it. (:

Welcome again, good luck, and many blessings to you!

Cheers,
Bre

Welcome to Authonomy. Being a fairly old hand here (over two years), I'm just waving hello and offering a few suggestions to help your book prosper, based on my own experience with the site. I am not asking for backings; one book has made the ED and the other is here only for comments.

Having retired from a 43 year career teaching college English, I'm at last writing full time. My books have received so many gratifying and helpful comments here that I try hard to reciprocate. I'm grateful to HarperCollins for creating this interactive community.

Any new online environment has a learning curve. This one takes a while to get used to, but you can get valuable feedback on your writing. I suggest checking the Tips, the FAQ's. and an EXCELLENT forum thread for new members: http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/74122/the-newbie-thread-/ (Just paste the URL into your browser). Also, if you are not an experienced writer, check out my general advice thread at http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/43392/elementary-concerns-a-b-c-for-younger-authors/.

In a sense, we are competitors and teammates at the same time, like co-workers seeking promotions but wishing each other well. This competitive-cooperative relationship is a little paradoxical! Reactions here will vary from gushing praise to harsh criticism. The criticism is often more useful than the praise, so it's wiser to be calm and receptive than overly sensitive about your "baby" being attacked.

Thin-skinned writers who rush to defend their work tend to be ignored.

Editing/revising books is the main task here. We consider each other's suggestions--including those by the editors at HC--and try to make our own books as publishable as possible.

Like some other web sites, Authonomy can be both a lot of fun and DANGEROUSLY addictive!

Welcome to Authonomy! You’ve probably already noticed that you’re receiving requests from authors who want you to read their book right away. It’s important to promote your work, and that’s one way to do it.

Another way is to visit the forums and participate in the conversations you see there. Many older and wiser members post in the forums, so it’s a great place to learn.

You could also find a critique group and join it. Then you’ll be part of a group that’s agreed to read one another’s works. Click on the “Forum” link and then choose the Book Genre Message Boards. Find your genre, and see if there’s a crit group.

You can also post a thread about your book on the “Shameless Plugs” board. Post a message to tell us about yourself.

The most helpful thread on the entire forum is just for newbies. You can visit it at http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/74122/the-newbie-thread-/ Another thread you might want to visit covers publishing basics: http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/88992/real-help-for-serious-writers/.

Some acronyms you’ll run across here: SP is your short pitch. LP is your long pitch. MC is main character, MS is manuscript.

Tips: if you hover your icon over the little arrow by your rank, you’ll see yesterday’s rank. When you receive a comment, don’t hit “reply,” instead choose “send message” to thank the reviewer. When you use the “reply” here the reviewer doesn’t see it, and it artificially inflates your number of comments.

I am glad I found Authonomy and posted my book here. I’ve received helpful feedback that I’ve used to improve my manuscript. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Hello Cieran,

Can I interest you in a read swap? The premise of your book is intriguing! I have put it on my watchlist.
My book, Book of Remembrance, is an epic fantasy.

Thanks

"Stolen Childhood" wrote 464 days ago

Hi Ciraran
I like to welcome you to Authonomy. You are probably be a bit overwhelmed by many requests to "back this and back that" I have been over 1 year, and I am used to it. I must admit that I felt a bit intimidated the first week on this site. I recommend you to back the books you would like to support, and to not feel that you are pressurized to do all the requests and take your time to be a bit selective with what books you choose.
I am wondering if you could be so kind to have a little look at my autobiography Stolen Childhood. Though it is quite a dark story and can be traumatic for some to read, it has a happy ending. This book might not be your type of read at all, but I do hope that you are able to consider “backing” my book, by giving it a few days on your shelf, that would give me tremendous support.
I perfectly understand if you are not able.
Yours sincerely
Laila

Hello Cerandor. I was wondering if you'd like to swap reads. My book is about a woman who stands up to spiritual abuse in the church. Let me know...Georgia
The Woman From E.A.R.L.

Emily takes a stand against spiritual abuse in the church and rediscovers her faith along the way.

Grief-stricken Emily has had enough of Mainard Bible Church. If Jane isn't trying to pry information out of her about her spiritual condition, Alicia's busy telling her what “the Lord said.” The new pastor has left, but not before dividing the congregation. Now Emily’s best friend, Ida, won’t talk to her, and reading the Bible for herself only makes things worse. She's lost her husband and her faith. She's not coming back.

Emily starts a chat room and blog called EARL, a place where people share their stories of spiritual abuse, stories she finds deeply moving. Soon, she’s in over her head and recruits the help of Alden Daniels, a counselor and minister. There’s an instant spark between Emily and Alden, one she’d rather ignore.

Now another new pastor is trying to take over all spiritual and financial control of the church. Emily's once church family at Mainard needs her help to stop him.

With the support of Alden, a new friend, Charlea, her old friend, Ida, and a dog named Rowdy, Emily slowly learns to live again.

Hello Ciaran ,
Welcome to Authonomy. For a start, you will probably be flooded with requests to read and back particular books. But here’s a hint: read only what you want to read, and back only what you want to back. For some useful information, plus some recommendations of books by other new members, try the Newbie Thread, http://www.authonomy.com/forums/threads/74122/the-newbie-thread-/

Magic Door knob
T.D.Holland

When Ricky’s dad goes missing, he leaves Ricky with a small brass doorknob as a reminder of their days spent together, inventing things. Quickly, Ricky discovers that this is no ordinary doorknob; in fact, the brass article is magic, and when placed on a flat surface, opens a portal to fantastic and different lands.

Hi Cerandor and welcome to the site. If you have any questions re this madhouse just give me a shout and I'll try to answer them. I will check out your book as soon as I can - pitch sounds good. If you like supernatural thrillers my book might fit you. The Angel Chord - three strangers stumble into an End of Days demonic plot and discover that atheistic, hooker-using, guitar playing angels are the world's only hope. All the best Cerandor and I always return reads.

Ciaran,

Hi. I was wondering if you could take a look at my book The Ark of Humanity, and consider putting me in your watchlist or on your shelf. Here's the pitch,

God flooded the earth to annihilate humanity's sins. What if that sinful race didn't die when floodwaters covered them but instead adapted to breathe water?

Let me know what you think. Have a wonderful day!
