You have a real gift for descriptive narratives (writing sex scenes!) and wonderful characterization so much so that I feel like I have read about these folks before somewhere! This has got the makings of a good yarn but I struggled through chapter 2. Sex and violence sells we know but surely both must advance the story. The mock rape in chapter one does. The sex scene at the top of chapter 2 doesn't. It's gratuitous; maybe OK for Playboy. But come to that it's not particularly erotic either. It's better for the mind to do the work than to spell it out in graphic detail. Dripping juices don't do much for my libido.
I stand by my original comments that this has the makings of a good story and I'll continue to keep it watchlisted.

I echo JJ's comments. It's a good start. An engaging, betrayed young hero, a wily crook a la Fagin, and a good mix of history. Though not littered with errors I did notice one or two. I know how difficult it is to proof your own work.
Perhaps a little wordy in places e.g. 'walked slowly forward', the forward is unneccesary as it's usual. 'Walking backward would need to be explained. She pulls down her petticoats 'covering her legs is not needed. Nap is not spelt with a K.; There a quite a few 'feelings' in one para; 'firmly grabbed' is a split infinitive. My history may be a little lacking but did they have pound coins in those days? Isn't it more likely to have been a guinea?
All in all though a good start. I'll watchlist this too.

The characterization is superb, one quickly gets a clear image of the main characters - the underlying power and menace of Bannister, Clarkson's opportunism, Will's teenage naivety. The work flows at a quick pace, putting it down is not an option, one can't wait to read what happens next. Good stuff - on my bookshelf.

Comment from tiggertoo - 27/12/2008 13:05:34

Hi James
Great start. I've put it on my watchlist and intend to read more. So far read 2 chapters and only have 1 minor thing: a typo in chapter 2 "I'm getting to old..." Apart from that it is well written and gripping. Is Will going to grow up to be Bill or is the similarity of names just a coincidence? I have no idea where it's going, but it seems to work. If you get the chance, please reciprocate and look at book number 4594.
