about me

Writer, Musician, Producer, Director.

Alan Bennett and Richard Briers have been very supportive towards my work, as was the great Spike Milligan.
The style of my writing is graphic and detailed so please don't expect any gun shots or bad language.
It is best described as 'kite flying for the imagination.'
I really hope you enjoy the world I have created.

The central character, amateur entomologist Arnold Matson, was inspired by an award-winning novel by Professor Steve Jones entitled ‘Almost Like A Whale,’ which is an updated version of Charles Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species.’ Professor Jones is Head of Genetics at University College, London, and he has kindly given me permission to include his quotes throughout my novel.

Should anyone be interested, I produced an audio version of the first three chapters which is narrated by the magnificent Prunella Scales.
It is available as a download through Audible.

The full novel is also available on Kindle.

Dandruff Hits The Turtleneck

John Mayfield

An amateur entomologist takes over a backwater public house and is trusted with a secret that must go no further.

From the moment pub landlord and keen amateur entomologist, Arnold Matson, arrives in Blinkington-on-the-Treacle to take over his new hostelry, we are led through a colourful collection of vignettes and poignant flashbacks that are both comically funny and disturbingly familiar, as well as a bolt from the blue confession which tests Matson’s resolve and discretion to the limit. Following the loss of his fiancée several years earlier, Arnold Matson’s mind set can be described as confused and fragile, but as he slowly settles into his new routine in unfamiliar surroundings, the fragility and guarded secrets of other parishioners give him an insight into his own fallibility and unforeseen strength of character.
