DCI Kaczynski, in the East Midlands. and his family have to deal with a body that is related to the inspector's grandmother .
Michal Kaczynski is a Detective Inspector of Polish origin, a resident of Melton Mowbray in the East Midlands. On market day as much Polish is heard side by side with English.. Michal’s mother tells the story of the family escaping from Poland to her grandchildren. She takes a keen interest in their schoolwork, especially the history of their family. The variety of Polish food that Kasia, Michal’s wife, serves, is a special feature. The Detective has two murders to solve; firstly is that of a University student battered to death in a village cellar; secondly is the discovered when the police clear the cellar. It is a skeleton provisionally dated to 1940, so from wartime England. He solves the first with good old police legwork. The second is more problematic as tests reveal it to be related to Michal’s grandmother’s family. I
The Commander does however both condone and admire Michal’s use of the new SOCA – Serious Organised Crime Agency to further enquiries into Polish criminal families, especially their links with British criminality.
