about me

I am a television writer and stand-up comedian.

My television and radio credits include; Loose Ends, The Stand Up Show, Not Tonight with John Sergeant, Large and Glee Time. Most recently I was a presenter on Channel 4’s Big Brother’s Little Brother.

I directed and presented the programme "How To Steal an Identity" for Channel 4, in which I stole the identity of former Home Secretary Charles Clarke. The programme was Pick of the Day in The Guardian and The Telegraph described as “Fascinating and Disturbing” by the TV Times. It went on to be short-listed for a BAFTA.

I have written for many comedy shows including The 11 O’clock Show, RISE, Commercial Breakdown and the BAFTA winning V Graham Norton. I am also one of the writers on The Slammer for BBC1 and I have written most episodes of Genie in the House, the highest rated children’s sitcom on Nickelodeon.

I am a past winner of both the TAPS Comedy Writer of the Year Award and the BBC New Writer's Award, and I am a past finalist of the BBC New Comedy Awards. However my proudest moment was coming third in the 1982 Boy Scout Disco Dancing Championship.

Hopelessly Devoted is my first novel. So far I have failed to find a publisher as I have been told, and I quote: "Women won't buy romantic comedy from male writers." Which is a shame.

Here are some quotes I've received on the book:

"Funny from beginning to end”… Ricky Gervais
“A very funny insight into life”… David Baddiel
“The perfect romantic comedy, I loved it.”… Jimmy Carr

I hope you like it. Just pretend I'm not a man.....

Steve Connors is so obsessed with a girl he bumped into 18 years ago, he is unable to carry on with his life. Until...

Steve Connors has always done everything half-heartedly. He’s had a succession of jobs, run his own businesses and dated a number of girls - all without a hundred per cent commitment. The only thing to which he has ever given total commitment is thinking about a girl he bumped into at a disco, eighteen years earlier. Only now, in his late 30’s, has he realised how this obsession has completely taken over his life. His current business, a Talent Agency based in London, is losing money, he owes rent on his flat and he has accumulated an impressive collection of debts. Knowing that he won’t be able to move on, or be successful with anything, until he exorcises this ghost from his past - or preferably meet it – Steve decides that it’s time to seek help.

As it has been turned down because of my whole 'wrong gender' status I was begining to doubt if it really was funny or in any way entertaining. You've renewed my faith in i... view book

Thank you Ms Q. Your comments are appreciated. No, this isn't the end, it's just the beginning (a direct quote from Grease. What do you mean a tad obsessed!) Thanks for the tips also. Best wishes, Bennett view book
