about me

I've published some non-fiction; mainly chapters in polemical books, and a little print journalism, and I've recently had a short story in an anthology of crime fiction (Written in Blood edited by Lindsay Ashford and Caroline Oakley - Honno 2009). I am the editor of a fashion website, and I've worked in the fields of higher education and professional training. Above all, I've always wanted to write fiction, and I've recently managed to organise my life so that I have time to write.

favourite books

I read pretty widely, and admire many different writers for many varied reasons. Julian's Barnes' Arthur & George made a deep impression, but I love comic and satirical writing, too. Jonathan Coe, Will Self, Michael Chabon. I'll read genre fiction, too, and I can admire the way in which a form can be made to serve wider authorial purposes whilst still delivering the goods in the way readers of genre fiction expect.

The Reduction of Polkey

Yasmin Jones

What happens when urban villains meet rural weirdness? Trouble, that's what.

A mob of south London villains find themselves deep in West Wales in a comically surreal clash of civilizations. Karl is a dodgy Greenwich businessman who has become a beneficiary of the 2012 Olympic bid when his estate of seedy lap dancing clubs, pool halls, and car clamping lots is suddenly worth serious money. As a result he's attracted the attention of Polkey, a villain in a different league who has bigger plans for Karl and his assets. Plans involving carousel fraud, antiquities smuggling and arms dealing. Karl's aide, Perle, a struck-off barrister, hatches a plot involving an electronic device implanted in a cat in order to discover Polkey's intentions. It might have worked. But Polkey's plans involve a property in Wales where everything starts to unravel.

But Wide Awake Is Best

Yasmin Jones

Sex is wasted on the young. The time to behave badly is when you know you're not immortal.

Tom Vane's a happy man. OK, so his wife's told him to 'fuck off and drink yourself to death', but he can see her point of view. And there are plenty of other women out there, especially in the world of the mature student, where mid-life crises present one endless opportunity. Bitter divorcees, downsizing corporate lawyers, dotcom sell-outs, ex-cons, the mental health community; they all wash up on the shores of the west coast in a quest for everything from diversion to salvation. Tom's left his London home to live a student life the second time around, unencumbered by family responsibilities. It's a shallow, unhealthy existence fuelled by drink, dope and Lidl pizza, where people who once ran companies live by a 'surf and shag' creed. Tom has placed himself firmly in the camp of those who seek only endless diversion, but things begin to change when he encounters someone who is genuinely strange. Perhaps, he dares to think, salvation is possible after all?

Thanks, K, for your comments. Everyone who's read this always loves the cat! It's why I've put it up here. But I know you are right. People I trust have read this and say that the narrative gets better and clearer as it proceeds, but that the first chapter in particular is cluttered and confusing... view book

Thanks Emily, for those helpful and kind words. I'm doing a modest revision of the chapters currently posted to take some limited account of comments made so far, and I'll repost with a couple of extra chapters asap. But to take on the issue of making characters more sympathetic, or inserting some... view book

Thanks. I intend to upload more, but due to a problem with my PC I'm currently confined to using an Asus Eee with a 7" screen and a tiny keyboard! It makes doing anything more than emailing quite a challenge. i shall keep on with reading your novel, and that of select others, whilst waiting for ... view book

Thanks Toscka and Jaeger for your helpful comments. I need to think seriously about this, as Tom really is the intended central character, whereas Kate is just the aga saga lady. The age question is a good one, too. I intended Tom and Kate to be much the same age, mid-late 40s. There is a referen... view book

Thanks, Vicki. If my characters are exasperating, that's as it should be! Though I hope to make people like them, too. view book
