about me

I am a 44 years old sales manager from Staffordshire. I have been a keen amateur historian since childhood and I am an avid reader of historical military fiction. Turncoat is my debut novel and is now complete. I am now well into my second novel, CLANSMAN, which will be ready by early summer 2012. My research includes battle reenactments to get a feel for how it must have been, fighting with sword, pike & musket in the 17th century. I aim to develop open-ended series of novels set during the period, in an action-packed and swashbuckling style that is easy to read.

I welcome all open, honest and constructive views on my work and I will endeavour to offer the same in return. I will comment as a reader rather than a writer and try to explain what I did, and did not, like and why. I will tend to offer more detailed comments on historical fiction and heroic fantasy fiction because I have read a lot these genres and feel more qualified to opine. I think it important to offer constructive criticism rather than just 'backed'! Sometimes I back and follow up with comments when I get more chance to sit and think about it.

UPDATE - April 2012. I have perhaps 8 weeks work left on this novel and therefore my activity will be limited. If you do review Clansman I will reciprocate, even if it is after I finish my manuscript. Feel free to jog my memory :-)

Thanks,
Linton

Clansman

Linton Wood

1689, the Scottish crown is turmoil. Catholic King James is usurped by his protestant son-in-law, William. Rebellion flares and two young Highlanders join the fray.

When they unwittingly foil an assassination attempt on a prominent Jacobite Earl, James and Angus MacGregor, two young Highland clansmen, are thrust into a vipers nest of murder and political intrigue for which they are wholly unprepared. A mission to Edinburgh to warn leaders of the Jacobite cause goes badly wrong and they are forced to fight for their lives within the city walls. Beset by enemies the chase continues into the glens until this small spark ignites of flames of rebellion, beginning a conflict that will drench The Highlands in blood for generations.

Clansman is a traditional 17th century tale of heroic adventure with a cast of colourful characters and historical battles that aim to thrill the reader and inspire interest in British history.

Although not what I would normally choose to read, I found Taskeru to be an imaginative and intriguing idea that is well told. You use lots of dialogue to move things along and to show reader what goes on in your imagined world without boring descriptive narration. Perhaps at times some of the spe... view book

I don't generally go for books written in a present tense, but 'Paint' is conveyed in a very imaginative and thought provoking manner with good historical detail. Sights, sounds and smells are used to add realism but without being too long-winded. Personal feelings and experience of the characters... view book

HISTORICAL FICTION GROUP REVIEW Your short and long pitches are good. They tell us at once that we are about to read an alternate history and, for me and many others, set in period of great interest. The cover picture is good but perhaps it might benefit from something British behind Napoleon? ... view book
