about me

GENE CRYER spent thirty-eight years as a journalist, including fifteen as editor and vice president of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, before retiring to pursue the passion which led him to journalism--writing. While working on his novel, he taught journalism as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University, conducted editing workshops for the Florida Center for the Book and is immediate past president of The Writers’ Network of South Florida. He also is a volunteer narrator recording books and periodicals for Insight for the Blind.
Cryer worked as a reporter and editor at several Illinois newspapers before becoming the chief editorial executive of the Sun-Sentinel. During his tenure, the Sun-Sentinel doubled its circulation to more than 300,000 daily and 400,000 Sunday while other newspapers throughout the country struggled to maintain readership.
He was honored as an outstanding journalism alumnus of Southern Illinois University and served on the alumni advisory committee of the College of Mass Communications and Media Arts. He has been a Pulitzer juror, president of the Illinois AP Editors Association, the opening speaker at the 1994 World Editors Conference in Vienna and won awards as a journalist, a manager and a short story writer.
Cryer has been an active Appaloosa horse exhibitor and breeder and won a dozen National and World titles in non-pro western pleasure. He served two years as national president of the Appaloosa Pleasure Horse Association and ten years on the board of directors.

Just a Slow News Day

Gene Cryer

A satiric tale of a chronic loser who learns on Christmas morning that he has won a $100 million lottery prize...and then things get worse.

Luke Wahrm, labeled at birth as a chronic loser, has been unsuccessful all of his life, even at commiting suicide. After a Christmas Eve encounter with a woman he believes to be a prostitute and a visit to a church run by a recovering alcoholic, ex-con, mail order preacher, a friendly but somewhat eccentric lady cop conducts an exorcism of the ghosts of Christmases Past in a ceremony in Florida's Everglades.
On Christmas morning, Luke discovers he has won $100 million in the Florida Lottery. And then things get worse.
Million dollar gifts to friends and family are greeted with hostility, suspicion and greed. His sudden sucess as the author of a controversial novel generates what seems to be incessant picketing and TV news attention. But all of that discomfort is mild compared to his attempted kidnapping by two derelicts armed with a water pistol.

Alena...This is truly an incredible story, one that few persons could tell with such candor and courage. But I'm disappointed as a reader. You tell me a great deal with your narrative, but in each chapter there are opportunities for you to show me, to show me the gradual stages of Deni's growth, to... view book

David-I concur with many of the comments already posted, so I'll not waste time with redundancy or ther than to say you've composed an interesting, well-written story. However, there are a couple of points which concern an old editor. You have a tendency to occasionally change points of view without... view book
