STOLEN MEDIEVAL DRAWINGS
A CRUMBLING COLONIAL MISSION IN BAJA
A BIZARRE ANIMAL CARCASS IN THE RAIN FOREST
SECRET KENNELS IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT
After escaping from machete-wielding logging-camp guards, surviving a beating by a territorial chimpanzee, and trekking barefoot and wounded for two days through the central African rainforest, eco-spy Amy Kellet figures she's finally safe.
She's wrong. Her curiosity about the strange animal carcass she saw during her ordeal has stirred up some dangerous people.
It's also been noticed by amateur historian Stephen Stokes, who sends Amy images of something that closely resembles her creature. He says the drawings are from the Middle Ages and the Spanish Conquest. He says he's got boxes of them, but wants her to keep it quiet because they're stolen goods.
Together they figure out what made the animals valuable in the distant past, and why present-day thugs want to knock off anyone who knows about them. Amy's academic curiosity about the creatures has made her a target of ruthless thugs, and that her contact with Stephen has pulled him and others into the same line of fire. In order to survive, they must find a way to evade or thwart those with a high-stakes interest in keeping the animals a secret.
