Sitting on their rock in the cool water of Coffman Creek one hot dry summer two best friends, Maggie Montgomery and Jeremiah Tate, make a promise to always stay best friends no matter what happens in life. As they get older they realize life can not be directed as they each face their own battles. Maggie longs to leave the small southern town for a college education while her parents expect her to stay and become a teacher.
