about me

My crime novel, All That Glisters, originally got to around number 45 but family loss caused me to leave the site awhile and when I came back, it was around number 100.

Using the Authonomy site is a bit of a conundrum, to me. Of course, you need to market a book. However, it seems that you have to spend far too much valuable writing time on the forums here to even have a chance of getting your book looked at. Personally, I'd prefer to spend that time marketing my book, getting it out there and making valuable contacts.

HC say that they don't depend on the Editor's desk picks, so I thought, if they're going to see it anyway, why is the desk SO important? But it seems it is, and so is all that forum chatter, because in a year and a half, I've only received one single review and, of course, my ranking has stagnated.

Consequently, I'll leave Authonomy to itself. Sure my book's on here, and I guess I'll keep rewrite's updated, but as for chasing the forums for a ranking, I'm going to pass on that right now.

Since I finished 'All That Glisters' I've been working as a freelance writer for a number of clients around the world. It's nice to make a bit of money from your passion, eh? I've also written a sitcom, self-published my poetry book, started on the follow-up to 'Glisters' and, most exciting for me, started a new book - 'Hopper'.

As for the bio bit...

I am a freelance writer, originally from Leicestershire but now living on the Welsh Coast.

I have worked within the Civil Service, Police Force, as a College Lecturer, Performance Poet and run my own bookshop.

I have a First Class Honours Degree in Cultural Studies, a Chief Constable's Commendation and a bad back. No prizes for guessing which is the most use to me. I get to sit down quite a bit.

favourite books

Anything by Lee Child, Simon Kernick, Robert Crais, Kinky Friedman, Danny King and, of course, Raymond Chandler.

All That Glisters

Rob Thomas

Not just murder, burglary, gold and guns, but family, friendship and the occasional full English.

For reformed criminal Harry Fox, paying off old debts has become very pressing. Putting his past behind him, he’s scraping together enough working Leicester market to keep his nostrils clear of the water. But ex-school bully and deluded wannabe Mafioso Gas Bobby, is demanding Harry clears an outstanding marker by turning over a warehouse at a very precise time.

With a new set of morals but, out of options, and out of time, Harry breaks his self-imposed abstinence from crime. In the warehouse, he witnesses the brutal murder of old mate 'Dodgy' Hodges. Suspecting a set-up, Harry goes into hiding. Who would murder 'Dodgy'? It’s no coincidence Bobby sent him that night but why is Harry being set up? And how?

Searching for answers and with no sign of Dodgy’s body, Harry eventually uncovers a secret so painful it’ll never leave him.

Of course, none of this is easy with constant nagging from his sister and worry about his dementia afflicted Mum.

Not just murder, burglary, gold and guns, but family, friendship and the occasional full English.

A crime thriller set in the dark underbelly of Leicester.

Manuscript complete: 110,000 words.

Rob Thomas has been writing poetry for around two decades, having been inspired by the likes of Roger McGough and the Liverpool poets, through to the punk poets of the 80s and the emerging new breed of comic poets. He has performed his often hilarious verse around the West Country. More Than I Can Chew is simply packed full of contemporary poetry that is often comic, often sad, but always an insightful pleasure.

Thanks for the once over. I've not really been using Authonomy, due to the whole forum sycophancy thing, so it was a surprise to get the email. I'm very glad you didn't find it LOL funny, it's certainly not meant to be. Though I didn't want it as 'hard' as many crime novels are. I guess I was l... view book

Thanks for the read and the shelving. I'm not too sure about your observations. The murder takes place about half way down page one, so I'm not sure how you mean when you say 'If you read back through yourself, you'll see there are no real major events early on, no snappy prologue with a bloody d... view book

I'm really not a fan of fantasy. In a big way. But, then, you promise a shelving for a comment, so, here goes: I desperately dislike your book opening with quotes. Certainly on Authonomy, I want to read YOUR stuff. Your writing style is comfortable and tight. The visual imagery is good, th... view book

Good God man, this is brilliant. Seriously. The opening chapter had me dumbstruck in awe and desperate to read chapter two. Which just continued to be most excellent. The characterisation, the location establishment, the subtle and wonderfully observant descriptives ('the twelve doors opening si... view book

An excellent opening to an intriguing book. Though I write crime thrillers myself, I'm always drawn to this type of stuff. The opening rather reminds me of Iain Banks, a writer I greatly admire. I'm going to shelve this on the strength of the first chapter alone as it has drawn me in immediatel... view book
