Doing time on a two square kilometre rock called Malè in Maldives, home to 125,000 Muslims.

She wanted to holiday in Maldives after a chance remark overheard in 1987.
19 years later (and a fully paid up binge drinker suffering from love obsession) she aims to instead be LIVING in Maldives by her 50th birthday - and makes it with one day to spare.

EXCERPTS
"My new friend is Deo Charles Lemali; he is from Lesotho but lives in Paris. Our 'relationship' is all of eight minutes old when he suddenly declares, "Jane, I have seen you, you have impressed; I want you to be my lover." He is leaving for India on Sunday and will give me a mobile to keep in touch. Then he outlines the travel programme he has worked out for us."

"Some amusing signage:
A florist’s front window: Say it With Flowers … Cactus.
A men’s clothes shop: Natural Nobody.
A grocery store is the sinister: Fresh Memorial.
A house called the siren-like: Boiling Fish."

Hello, Bethany BDD is a relatively little-known subject. I mention it in my book because although I had a very minor defect (ripped pupil) that aspect ruled my life and adversely affected me until I was over 50 and found out about prosthetic lenses. For much of my life I would only got out at nig... view book

Hello, KK I like the way we learn about a few characters so quickly; that is quite a skill to be able to reveal what people about – by showing not telling. Often new writers chuck down a whole pile of adjectives which doesn’t really tell us anything about the person within – the character in fact. ... view book

Hello, Andrew It is always interesting to come across writing that is different, experimental even. I enjoyed the mad dash thought process and so many fascinating images were thrown up. I could more or less follow what was happening but I must admit I was dying to come across a slower pace – at... view book

Hello, Sneaky Please forgive me if I appear to contradict myself from other previous comments; I have tried to look at these opening chapters as if for the first time. As you know (!) I always like to try and put down some crit first as none of us can say our book is pretty much ready as present... view book

Hello, JL Ch 11 on. I like the contrast with the roughness of Rory (language, etc) with the also mothy SV. The bit where Rory is gagging is really funny; I can picture it very easily from your few well-chosen words and the fact that SV is walking ‘very, very slowly.’ The atmosphere is generated a... view book
