about me

I am a notorious gossip and a professional photographer, who freelances as a reporter for a local community newspaper in a small town in the midwest that is internationally famous as the birthplace and home of the cereal industry.

Last summer, I covered a local story that made headlines around the world, the Kalamazoo River Oil Spill. I also investigated the company responsible in order to dig for dirt on them.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a small-town news reporter, took on a large corporation? Who would win?

On July 27, 2010, the residents of Battle Creek, Michigan, woke up to a catastrophic environmental disaster. Crude oil was flowing down the Kalamazoo River right through town. From a pipeline they didn’t know existed, owned by a company they had never heard of. In the shadow of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a massive cleanup effort began that continues to this day. Leap of Faith is a revealing portrait of a small-town famous for breakfast cereal and an energy giant famous for owning the world's largest oil pipeline, told through the eyes of a wisecracking local reporter with a fondness for activism and Internet pop culture. First, I covered the breaking news story and then conducted an intensive investigation of the company, their corporate culture, their history, their people and their CEO. I was looking to find the worst. They gave me total access, and I found the truth.

Great story. I love it. Interesting how it takes an oil spill to make us see how humanity is carelessly destroying the Earth with its own lifestyle. The night a catastrophic oil spill made its presence known in my town with a horrific stench, I sat up most of the night until the sun came up a... view book

Love the title, Derek, I may have to use that as a new curseword :) Throughout human history, our mythology has contained Christlike figures with a certain group of characteristics, Jesus and Harry Potter are two of them. I found it very interesting that you compared how these two stack up. I've r... view book
