A childhood rivalry takes on a more sinister twist later in life.
“We were always a weird little family, this much was true. Our team of three, as my father once falteringly called us, was always ambiguously bound. My mother hadn’t wanted kids but went through with it once because she was competitive and most of her friends had two. But the ordeal of birth being over, it turned out motherhood meant something else. Once, drunk after my fifth birthday party, she threw her drink in my face and burst into tears. I never could quite understand what it was I had done to destroy her life.”
