about me

I'm a fully qualified newspaper journalist, about to make my first foray into literature! Looking for help and advice. This is a journey for me. Rather than write my first book and upload it for all to read, I want to write it with the authonomy community firmly behind me. My aim is not to get it published. My aim is to learn how to write fiction.

I invite you all along for the ride!

Mindscape: An Act of God

Malcolm Cox

New York City is on the verge of self-destruction. The invisible aggressor must be stopped.

Brett Newman's life had gone from one disaster to the next during the decade after 9/11. His experiences of that day left scars so deep, he found it difficult to get out of bed every morning.

After ten years of working dead-end jobs, the former Financial Analyst had been reduced to easing his conscience at the homeless shelters of New York City.

Finally losing patience, Brett's long suffering girlfriend gives him an ultimatum: Get a job, or get out!

Brett finds himself in the Empire State Building, waiting for an interview for a job he doesn't want. In an elevator, climbing to the 56th floor, all power is lost and both he and his fellow passenger are plunged into total darkness. Something is very wrong.

New York City faces evil once again, only this time it may not recover. The fate of Brett and New York City become intertwined in a brutal and horrific fight for survival. This great city is under attack and there's no one to fight back this time.

Thanks for critique Just a couple of points: The repetition you mention is supposed to be there for a reason. Also, I'm English, so write in English. An editor would 'Americanize' the text for an American audience. Thanks for your comments. view book

Genuinely blown away by your help. This is science fiction, so I suppose skipping large periods of time is acceptable. It won't seem like it, but the essence if this story is SciFi. Thanks again! Speechless at the detail you gave the review - it helped me immensely. Malcolm view book

Wow, thanks so much - writers would pay editors a fortune for this kind of critique. I have made all the changes you suggested; some of them were glaringly obvious after several read-throughs. I just wanted to explain something though. I did a lot of research into the stairwell evacuations of... view book

Club nanobots critique Accomplished peice of writing with a few areas to tidy up in edit - that's why we're all here isn't it? The scene where Kane finds the deadless corpse gave me chills. Nice touch at the beginning, with Kane getting a scolding for dumping rubbish - sets him up as a la... view book

Club Nanobots review I must admit, I rather struggled with the huge amount of information contained within the first ten or so paragraphs. I also struggled to keep up with some of the dialogue - at times getting confused about exactly who was talking. I had to read this chapter twice to absorb ... view book
