about me

Let's get the really boring bit over with first...

I was born in a mining village in County Durham UK, and after studying English at University I trained as a marketing copywriter. Since then I've moved house seven times, had three children, set up two advertising agencies, had two novels published and trained as a silversmith.

My two published novels were both for Virgin Books Black Lace series ('erotic fiction for women, by women'). But my ambition is to write a novel I can actually tell my children about ('Mummy's a secret porn writer..' somehow doesn't tick that box.) Of course, I hope that the Authonomy site will bring me international fame and fortune....but in the meantime I'm looking for inspiration, advice, and - not to put too fine a point on it - a kick up the creative butt. Bring it on!

favourite books

'The Great Gatsby' F Scott Fitzgerald
The 'Angelique' series by husband and wife team Sergeanne Golon
'Fup' by Jim Dodge (who also writes great poetry)
'Vanity Fair' Wm Thackeray
The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
and almost anything by Wilbur Smith or Frank Yerby

I knew I was going to love this when I read the descriptions of the main characters - Ruth with 'breath like buttered toast' and Tolly with his 'forehead corrugated with questions'. A moving and gripping tale of innocence lost, and something else - ultimately - gained. Wisdom? Self-knowledge? But... view book

I see the nitpickers on the site have had a field day going over the shaggy pelt of this one. Sorry, but I enjoyed it. Ok, so the basic grammar, sentence structure, and POV is all to hell, but that can all be improved/learned/worked on. I think it will appeal to its target audience anyway. But w... view book

This sooooo deserves to be in print. It's a juicy, eyewateringly funny feast of a novel, with one sole purpose - to be enjoyed! And I certainly did - right from the first word of the pitch (masterful!) to the last full point at the end of Chapter 3. Chapter 3?? Come on man, pull your socks up and ge... view book

Thoroughly enjoyable, and all too readable. I sat down to read maybe two or three chapters and ended up reading the lot! John is an engaging mc - one the reader can cheer on, at the same time as wanting to give him a good slap. The writing is sharply observational and very well edited. To me, it ... view book

Great fun! What an engaging mc Noughtaless is. Highly original, and deserving of a wider audience. Backed! (ps 'quietens' is indeed a word - but it does look a little odd to the modern eye - pun intended) view book
