about me

I am a pastor in Ontario, Canada where I live with my beautiful wife Rachel and my wonderfully-rambunctious two-year-old Xander. I graduated with Highest Honors from Ottawa's Carlton University with a double major in Journalism and History, and a minor in English. I've always had a passion for writing and write in my spare time when I'm not doing pastoral work or managing and operating my business.

favourite books

Conn Iggulden's Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan sagas, Bernard Cornwell's historical fiction, Michael Curtis Fords' The Ten Thousand and Gods and Legions, Gilbert Morris' Winslow Series, The Thoenes' Zion Chronicles and Zion Covenant Series. Any well-written historical fiction or Christian historical fiction.

A War Within: The Praetorian

Nathan D. Maki

When you live a double life where do you draw the line?

Praetorian tribune Theudas ben Ya'ir seeks to find and free his mother -- a slave he was torn away from seven years before. Meanwhile, he uses his position to protect his friend Antonius and the other Christians.

Theudas's quest will lead him and Antonius from the infamous dungeon of the carcer to the catacombs and slave markets of Rome, and then beyond the borders of the Empire as Emperor Septimius Severus marches East to crush the powerful kingdom of Parthia.

But as Theudas's actions cause increasing suspicion from his superiors and the Emperor he faces an impossible choice. Is he a Praetorian or a Christian, a Jew or a Roman? And what does this mean for his new-fledged love with Antonius's sister Julia?

Antonius has begun his march home, but can his faith survive the devastation of civil war?

The "War Within" series is Christian historical fiction set in Ancient Rome at the end of the second century AD. The Early Church is facing vicious persecution even as the Empire is torn apart by civil war.

Antonius and his friend Theudas ben Ya'ir have escaped the Coliseum only to find themselves on a far deadlier battlefield. The entire Roman Empire is now wracked by civil war as four claimants lead their legions onto the field to vie for the Imperial Throne. Can the two friends find a way to survive? And even if they do will they ever be the same?

Originally posted on Authonomy as a single manuscript, A War Within: The Gladiator and A War Within: The Legionnaire have been published separately by Word Aflame Press in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Thank you to everyone whose critiques and support helped make this a reality!

I'm currently working on Book 3, A War Within: The Praetorian. (Also posted on Authonomy.)

You can find the War Within series for sale on Amazon or pentecostalpublishing.com.

A War Within: The Gladiator

When tragedy kills your faith what is left worth living -- and dying -- for?

The War Within series is Christian historical fiction based in Ancient Rome at the end of the second century AD, a time of persecution and civil war.

In The Gladiator tragedy tears young Antonius's family apart, leaving him doubting his faith and seeking vengeance. His family are Christians"Of Caesar's household" that the Apostle Paul spoke of in Philippians. When his father learns of an impending attack on his church he dispatches Antonius to warn the saints, including his mother and sister, but he arrives too late. Tragedy ensues and Antonius is arrested and forced into gladiator training.

Antonius faces a war within: if God is real how could this have happened? Should he fight in the arena, betraying his faith? Can he save his fellow Christian Sabina, a girl he is growing to love? And how will he get his revenge on the Emperor?

His quest for retribution will send him spiraling downward. It's a long march back.

A War Within: The Gladiator has now been published by Word Aflame Press!

This is a CLF2 review. Hi Dave, I think you've got the makings of a good story here, and you're on the right track posting it for review. You've got some good comments, critiques already from the CLF2 group and if you apply people's suggestions you'll end up with a much smoother story. I know I ... view book

Sometimes when all is lost all we can do is cling to the cross. Pressures and tragedies can push us away from God or press us closer to him. Congratulations on a tremendous, faith-building book! I'm happy to back it and give it six stars. Nathan Maki -A War Within view book

Wow, Jody, What an incredible story to inspire the title of your book. As I've worked down the list toward your book I've often wondered, "What does that title mean?" This story will stick with me for sure. I can identify with what you're talking about, doing street ministry. I did that for ... view book
