about me

Hi,

I live in Belfast with my husband and two young children, and having worked as a project manager for several years I decided on a change of direction and returned to university to undertake an MA in Creative Writing. After graduating with a distinction over two years ago, I have now turned my dissertation into a completed novel called Elastic Girl. This novel is set in India and is the story of a young girl sold to the circus by her parents. I am currently trying to find an agent/publisher for this work, but feedback and support from the autonomy community would be much appreciated.

At the moment I am working on my second novel (kindly supported by the arts council for Northern Ireland), and I also enjoy writing short stories and occasionally poetry. My other interests include cooking, travel (although now limited with two little ones!) and nights out with friends.

favourite books

There are so many, but some of the more recent books I have really enjoyed are Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, Witness the Night by Kishwar Desai and Pure by Andrew Miller. Two other books that have inspiried by own writing are A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and Fire on the Mountain by Anita Desai.

Elastic Girl

Olivia Rana

When she is only a child, Muthu Tikaram is sold as a contortionist to The Great Raman Circus of Chennai.

When her family are evicted from their home, Muthu is sold by her parents to the circus in Chennai, India. In her childish dream-world she believes she will become a star, but instead is transported into extremely challenging and terrifying circumstances, suffering abuse at the hands of the circus ring master and being made to perform several times a day inside the circus ring.

In the midst of all her suffering Muthu learns the truth about something she had never known - why her grandfather killed a man and why she had always felt to blame. Elastic Girl follows Muthu's struggle to break free from her ill-fated life and to make sense of her existence. It is a story of human survival against the odds.

Hi Pamela, You have a beautiful style of prose that seems to flow very naturally. I can also tell that you have researched thoroughly for this book, as it is very convincing of the time and place. Your characters are well thought out and there are nice contrasts between them, which sets up an ... view book

Hi Lenny, Sorry it has taken me a while to get around to it, but I have now managed to read the first few chapters and found this a very inspirational story. Your strenght is in your characterisation and dialogue, which makes it feel true to life. I did think that in some places you (as the nar... view book

Jesamine, As someone who has also written a novel around child abuse, I know how difficult this subject can be, but you have managed it in a very convincing and honest way. You are not over-emotive and allow us to see the harrowing effect of abuse for what it is, while providing us with an entra... view book
