about me

Living in quiet retirement in Australia. Writing for fun, to keep the old brain active and the other foot out of the grave. Not posting a picture of myself as I do not want to frighten anyone's horses.

The Ambassador's Last Post

Philip John

You have never heard of a British Ambassador, who causes mayhem wherever he goes? Well, meet Horace Morris, our man in Babul.

Horace Morris has blustered his way to the top
of the British Diplomatic Service. Now the ultimate prize
is within his grasp. His first and, because retirement
beckons, last post as an Ambassador. Her Majesty’s
Ambassador to the Republic of Babul, a small and remote
country, somewhere in Asia.

Wonderful ! Wonderful! Our very own Embassy at last! But
unfortunately for Horace and his devoted wife Doris, things are
not quite as wonderful as they had hoped.

Join Horace and Doris as they prepare for their big adventure.
Join them as they set out on the perilous journey to Babul.
And when they finally reach their destination, watch as they
add to the chaos which already awaits them.

Fiction? Not entirely, as anyone in the know will tell you.

( For those who like a bit of comedy in their lives, there is now a Part Two )

Dead Reckoning

Philip John

It's for the country. You are our man, Charles. You know how these things are done. Getting rid of people, we mean.

Wealthy businessman Charles du Randt is persuaded by friends in very high places to rid Britain of a number of troublesome individuals, who are seemingly beyond the law. To carry out the task he recruits a former soldier, Marc Dampier, who must first 'disappear' himself, to ensure absolute secrecy. One by one the targeted individuals meet untimely deaths, apparently from heart attacks. Only one person, a former girlfriend of Marc Dampier, suspects that something untoward is going on but her efforts to get at the truth are blocked at every turn. This is hardly surprising, given who was behind the original conspiracy.

None of this could possibly happen, you tell yourself. Not in a country like Britain. Not with people in such high places. But as the story takes a totally unexpected turn, you think again. Is it really so impossible?

( Two more thrillers with the same cast of characters and dramatic twists at the end of each story have been written but will be saved for another day)

Underworld

Philip John

So you think that the house you live in is yours, do you? Well, think again.

The family had no idea what they were letting
themselves in for, when they moved to their new house.
But the two children soon found out. The moment they
began exploring the old shed at the bottom of the garden
and met the occupant, who introduced them to a different
world and took them off on some amazing adventures.

I have taken your advice and dipped into this on an 'as and when' basis. Mainly 'when ' I have had time, I have to confess. There is nothing I have not enjoyed. You have a gift - some would say a rare gift - for this kind of writing. It is very easy to warble on in a long winded novel, where time a... view book

Hmmm! Interesting or at least potentially interesting, depending on how it all turns out. You have a writing style which is er - engaging and if you can find the drive and energy to finish the manuscript, this should turn out to be a very worthwhile exercise. On the bsais of what I have read so far... view book

This is good stuff, Laurence and I am sorry that I have not come across it before. You have managed to weave together a first rate adventure story, with a believable story line and interesting characters. You write well, with an excellent style and a sensible choice of words, where choice is called ... view book

This is all delightful, except that most people are likely to give the struggle to become writers at this point, for the simple reason that they cannot hope to compete. I certainly feel that it would be presumptuous of me to comment or criticise, although I would just like to put my head above the p... view book

This is a war story with a difference. A story of people rather than tanks and guns. Beautifully constructed as a story ( so far anyway) and very well written. Well done! Philip John view book
