about me

I'm Ruth. I'm a writer, but I'm also one half of an author. Ruth Mathews is one author in two persons. It sounds theological doesn't it? But actually it's just my friend Mat and me, writing books.

Mat and I knew each other when we were teenagers. Since then we've gone off and done lots of different things, some of them really quite crazy things by the standards of the place where we met; a strict, conservative Baptist church. When we got talking, nearly twenty years after our last proper conversation, we discovered that we both felt our journeys to have been valuable as well as turbulent and that we had emerged with stories to tell and experiences to share.

Mat had ideas for books. I was spilling poetry all over the place. We both wanted to hold the Bible and Christianity up to the light - to look at them from a new perspective and share not only our findings, but our seekings too with as many people as possible. We decided to get together and write novels.

On the whole, we collaborate on the ideas and I do most of the writing. Somehow, it works.

The cover designs and other graphics are also my own.

********* APOLOGIES ********

Apologies to anyone who's waiting for me to return a read or such like. If I've promised to look at your book, I will do my best to get onto it asap. Things are crazy at the moment and I'm a bit behind with things. Please bear with me and hopefully I'll be back and active in the not-too-distant future.

Thanks for your patience.

The Everlasting Monday

Ruth Mathews

Romance and mystery, adventures through space and time... God only knows what's going on. Thankfully He (or She) is the one holding the reins.

The first in a series, The Everlasting Monday is an adventure story intertwined with a classic romance. Through a series of mysteries, dreams and turbulent travels - during which they meet various people from the Old Testament and more than a couple of angels - Rob and Kate are forced to overcome the obstacles that have driven them apart. Not just the physical and emotional distances that now separate them, but the far more troubling legacy of a murky past that somehow links their two families.

But The Everlasting Monday is not just a story of two lovers trying to save their bond from the clutches of a destructive past. It is also a fascinating exploration of the stories of the Old Testament, taken out of their original context and revealed in a new light as part of Kate and Rob’s strange journey of discovery. This surprising and inventive story weaves its many strands together to present the Bible as an astounding, wonderful big picture created by a God who can use anything at all to get our attention.

The Scream

Ruth Mathews

Sam wakes up on a train. He doesn’t know who he is or where he’s going. An interesting choice of assistant for a murder investigation.

Sam Roden doesn’t know who he is, where he’s come from or where he’s going. His landlady Elizabeth says that everyone is like that; it’s just that most people don’t realise it. Sam has no memory, only a strange and illogical vision of a room that isn’t there and an eccentric friend who insists that Sam is the perfect assistant in his investigation of a murder.

The Scream is a detective novel with a difference. The difference being that the person helping to investigate the crime is asking the most unexpected questions; questions that are relevant to anyone who is ever going to die.

I didn't mean to read now - I'm meant to be looking after my children. I'm afraid I neglected them a little bit for the spellbound duration of your first chapter. It's beautifully written, well-paced and completely entrancing. The characters are very convincing and I like them all. Even, strangely, ... view book

Hi Hayley. I've only read the opening chapter so far and have to break there for now, but I've enjoyed what I've read so far. I like your descriptive style and the wistful atmosphere before the 'twist' is clarified. As Steve says, there's a sense of something ominous right from the start but for ... view book

Well Wilfred, thank you for your comment. I appreciate you taking the time to read and feedback to me. I do however find it quite strange that you've 'deduced' - correctly I might add - all these answers to your questions and yet still wonder what's happening in the story. Evidently what I have ... view book

Thank you Christine, your feedback is very much appreciated. You're right in your metaphor/simile nit pick. I'm a pedant too and feel thoroughly ashamed of myself. Especially as I'm an English teacher! I'll edit it in my own copy. Again, many thanks. Ruth. view book

Thank you! Very much appreciated. I'm glad you're enjoying the story, which is of course my main reason for being here. Your comment about the cover has made me smile too - I do all the artwork myself and it's very gratifying when people notice it! view book
